tone and mood

Jul 12, 2012

I’ve fallen off the photography practice wagon — sorry. Not to be making excuses, but things are insanely hectic around here right now. I did want to share a quick idea — not just for you practicing photographers, but also for all you scrapbookers out there too.

It’s not about drinking more wine, (although that’s ok too), it’s about photo toning and effects. By simply changing the color and tone of a photograph, you also change the mood… the way it makes the person viewing it FEEL.

The play of light colors against dark shades and angles in varying degrees helps to set the mood of a composition. When a photo consists of dark or somber shades, it may convey mystery, intrigue, or even sadness. When the tones are mostly light and airy, the photo may create the feeling of joy. Sepia tones are great when you want a photo to appear aged… like a photo of your great grandma in your scrapbook — or to make wine look like it’s aged and mighty fine…
