how’s the dog

The Chile miner rescue sure had a happy ending, didn’t it? More than once since the men were discovered alive on August 22nd (a full 17 days after the accident!!), I thought of how it must feel to be trapped for such a long period of time, not knowing my fate. When I crawl in the tanning bed, I don’t like to think about pulling the lid down — I simply can’t imagine being trapped beneath a mountain.

I’ve watched the rescue footage a couple of times, and I closely align myself with one dude rescued. Seriously. If I could survive such an ordeal — I would emerge from that rock dungeon and ask the same exact question that Mario Sepulveda did.

Amid church bells tolling and whoops of excitement from all gathered to get the first glimpse and touch of their loved one, Mario Sepulveda shouted in joy and plopped souvenir rocks into the hands of his rescuers. “I’m so happy!” he yelled. He could have been speaking for everyone watching. He kissed his wife, gazed into her eyes and said something Hollywood would not have scripted:
“How’s the dog?”
