he’s getting better – are you?

Jul 17, 2012

Perry started practicing photography when I started posting about it here on whatifitdid.com. In the past, I listened as he constantly complained that his photos were drab and he rarely got a photo that he liked. I shared a zoom lens with him (the only lens he has is the 50mm lens that came with his Canon Rebel) and encouraged him to get off that automatic setting and try shooting in manual mode. Perry is diggin’ his new hobby! The only viable suggestion I have for him at this point is to pick up a barrette for the non-hair he has on top. (I’m not sure what we can do about the nose that gets in the way short of rhinoplasty.)

Perry’s flower photos were very good… crisp, with insanely amazing color. But what I noticed most about his current shots as opposed to photos he’s taken in the past is the composition. It’s clear he picked up on two very important photo tips that makes all the difference in the world.

#1 When photographing pets or people — get close, get low, and keep the background simple.

#2 Set the tone by capturing expressions that give a sense of the person’s personality.

I think Perry is really improving — and I hope you are too!
