imac screen cleaning – removing the glass

Mar 21, 2011

Today I cleaned the inside glass on my iMac computers. The process was cake!

Behind every iMac screen is dust and dirt pulled through the cooling fans, and I spend a lot of hours looking at the nasty stuff. Take a look at any iMac, and about all you see is its screen’s viewing area. That glass has to come off to clean behind it, and it’s pretty intimidating. I simply wasn’t brave enough to attempt cleaning it until today.

I’m so proud of my bad self, I want to share this with you…

You need nothing more than a suction cup like you hook to your car’s windshield to hold Garmin so you don’t get lost — that’s my exact tool for the day. I know you have something similar, and if you don’t, I’m willing to bet you know SOMEONE that does. You put the suction cup near the top left corner of the glass and gently pull toward you. The glass rests in slots at the bottom, but is held in place entirely by magnets. Clean it as you would any glass, then set the bottom in first and slowly let the magnets pull it back in place when you’re done.

It’s a whole new world in the southern branch of MPG today — even Libby notices the difference.
