it’s in the genes

Yesterday I posted my opinion that my immediate family members look nothing alike.

John and Bessie McKainThe comments left were varied — from Ben and I looking alike but nothing like my Mother and Grandmother, to Ben looking like Scott but not me — and from the left eye/right eye similarity comment, to another that I look like my Grandmother and Ben looks like his.

I’ve been told for as long as I can remember that I look like the McKain side of the family. Scott’s looks were claimed by the Garriott side (from our Grandfather on Mom’s side of the family). I’ve been called “Bessie” (my Dad’s mother that was deceased before I was born) more times than I care to count. I’m wondering if that had more to do with actions than looks, because they say she was a ‘spitfire’, and I’ve been know to be slightly sharp-tongued at times as well. Seriously! I have! I am probably 2 foot taller than she was and have a chin. Maybe I look like Grandpa McKain minus the unibrow…

So I pulled out a few more photos for comparison…

my family

Here’s what I see — Ben has my Dad’s eyes …and mine are similar. Scott’s eyes do not resemble ours whatsoever. Agree with me so far? Good. So for more fun (and to get even with my older brother for a few of the evil things he did to me as a kid), I put photos side by side of him, my son, Ben, and me when we were all about the same age. I’m thinking the face shape is pretty close, but still – nothing that would make you automatically say we were so closely related. But check out the signatures. I KNOW that neither Scott nor I were adopted because we write almost just alike.

So do you look like your siblings? Your parents? Do your children look like you? A little? A lot?

I’m still looking for a few photos of the Garriott clan for photo comparisons. If I find them, I’ll share…
