motives

Jun 26, 2011

Perry and I have adopted a new form of communication. We often object to comments the other makes and cite “hearsay” as the cause. An occasional “relevance” objection is thrown into the mix, most often times sustained. It’s obvious we’re overexposed to the Casey Anthony trial. My problem? Perry seems to think HE’S the judge around here since he shares the name “Perry” with the judge in that case.

So all this trial watching has me thinking about motives. Not just the motive of Casey, but most everything in general — even individual organizational business motives, marketing motives, and more. Just as in criminal cases, motive is pretty important when it comes to figuring out why certain moves are made, and why — but motive can sure be a difficult thing to figure out.

For example, we THINK Casey’s motive to kill her daughter was to live what she believed to be a “beautiful life” (the whole tattoo thing)…one she couldn’t have while tied down with a small child. But we don’t know that. Another example I want to share is something I noticed insofar as social media. Reading tweets to catch-up on trial info that I missed during work hours, I kept noticing this one account tweeting within #caseyanthony. So I look at the quick profile (http://twitter.com/#!/Jejajo3), find that this account has a whopping 4 followers and has tweeted 335 times (so far). So I look at the tweets and find that most every single one of them has to do with Lee and Casey having consensual sex, and parents, George and Cindy being aware of it. Motive on that one? Who knows? But there has to be one…

It’s easy to speculate on motive, another thing entirely to prove it. Unless a person (or business) reveals their true motive(s) for any action, we can guess all day and never figure it out. Motives most times are layers and layers of thought processes.

It’s motive alone which gives character to the actions of men.

Update — my thoughtful post on motives has been sabotaged!

So Judge Perry T uploads the photo to Facebook…

Then it gets worse:

Alisa K Riley Sweazy I object! Relevance?
Perry Cremeans Overruled.
Alisa K Riley Sweazy Objection…hearsay
Alisa K Riley Sweazy May we approach for a sidebar please?
Perry Cremeans You may
Alisa K Riley Sweazy Objection! Information NOT in evidence!
Perry Cremeans What says the state?
Shelley McKain Erwin You’d think this would’ve grown old by now. But I guess some things never change. http://twitter.com/#!/judgeperrysays
Alisa K Riley Sweazy Chief Judge Perry T…I’ll bring you some ding dong cup cakes, better than what the ‘dessert lady’ offers, if we can take the court reporter and have a conference in your chambers?
Perry Cremeans Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. We have a legal ‘ding dong cupcake’ issue we need to discuss outside your presence. We’ll take a 20 minute recess.

Sometimes fun is the only motive. Apparently.
