the monkeys are about to be let out

I won’t be having my first cup of coffee outside this morning. It’s only in the mid-40’s. Is it fall already?? The cool air overnight combined with high humidity and we have a foggy morning!

foggy morning

This coming week is Coco’s last week of school.

SCHOOL’S OUT! SCHOOL’S OUT! Teachers let the monkeys out. Or are you even older and the teachers let the mules out?

Summer vacation is about to begin for kiddos everywhere. Coco will stay here while Ben is working and I’ll betcha she’ll make good use of the new pool. I love to swim… and I love the sun… but Coco and Carl are the biggest reasons I wanted a pool. They both need the exercise. 😉 (Not that I don’t!)

When Ben was young, we always had a place for him to swim at home. I can’t remember him ever getting in the water and goofing around alone, but he had friends over about every day. I hope we get as much good out of this pool as we did out of the one we had at the little house he grew up in.

It’s been over 10 years since I’ve had a pool in my yard.

circa 2012, me with baby coco

Circa 2012, Coco’s water experiences started young — and she loved it even then. We all got tired holding her in the water and passed her around till her little fingers and toes were like prunes. Next week, I’ll pick up goggles and dive rings for her and Carl — and an awesome raft for me.

Come on, warm weather! Cooperate with me on this!

TIL (Today I Learned): Fog does NOT “burn off.” That’s a myth. When the sun rises, the air and ground warm up. This leads to the air temperature being warmer than the dew point temperature, which causes the fog droplets to evaporate.

girl drama is alive and well

girl drama is alive and well

The second Coco walked in the door last night she asked for the WIFI password. Her laptop had never been online here and she had some school work to do (least that’s what she told me). She came here from an art thing of some sort and I told her how pretty she looked. I snapped this photo…

my granddaughter

Directly afterward, she dropped to her knees like she’d been shot in the back and began crying. One of her best friends is changing schools. She wailed, “What am I going to do??” I felt awful for her, hugged her… and talked about how they can Facetime, etc. She was totally tore down — a mess.

It’s been a long, long time since I was her age so my memory could be skewed, but the girl drama I remember was more along the lines of, “Imma make her eat dirt!

I remember friends moving away — heck, I vividly remember my friend Dianna Hughes that moved away and I haven’t seen her or heard from her since maybe 5th grade (ummm… that translates to the 60’s). I hated she moved, but it wasn’t like the end of the world or anything.

It’s tough being a girl.

It’s especially tough at my granddaughter’s age. She’ll be 13 next month and wears her heart on her sleeve. She’s incredibly dramatic even when she’s not faced with anything earth shattering. ❤️

I’m surrounded by girl drama!

Dharma and Merida displaying girl drama.

These two are overly dramatic too… especially Merida. Every little thing is a big deal and causes them both to overreact. If I’m away for an hour they both act like it’s been a month since they laid eyes on me. And when people come here that they see often, they still act like a serial killer has chosen their house for nefarious activity. 🙄

TIL (Today I Learned): NASA engineers designed a make up kit because they thought female astronauts would want make up in space.

how long does it take for fingers to wrinkle in water?

how long does it take for fingers to wrinkle in water?

Nervous systems were on high alert at the barndo today. They were shouting messages to our blood vessels to shrink — and shrink they did. Once that happens, skin folds over the thin vessels and wrinkles form. In warm water, that takes around 5 minutes or so. We resembled prunes.

Warm water and chilly air… expected since it IS still winter.

The water was warm — bumping between 103° and 104° — and we were out there more than 5 minutes. A LOT more than 5 minutes. One of us had warm water above the neckline… and that someone was not me. 😉

She’s growing up and I’m growing old(er).

Coco’s at that stage where she seems so “grown up” at times — and 5 minutes later she acts like a kid half her age. She’s funny… and quirky… and I sure love spending time with her. ❤️

Colette is growing up.

TIL (Today I Learned): Until 1921 the Colorado River did not flow through the State of Colorado. It took an act of Congress to “move” the river into the state by renaming the Grand River and adding it to the Colorado River.

rest your eggbag

rest your eggbag

A ‘Nanny saying’ passed to Mom… “rest your eggbag” — used when one is rushing or in too much of a hurry. I found myself saying it yesterday. Merida was the recipient but the excitement was caused by Colette. Not Coco’s fault at all… it’s just that Merida thinks she’s the best thing evah! 🙂

Around here, we all think that.

Colette and Ben

Yesterday morning was a bit frostier than this morning.

Matter of fact, it was cooler the entire day.

Merida and Dharma on a frosty morning

This morning started out nice, and right now we’re at 50 degrees and sunny. Not bad for mid February in Indiana, that’s for sure.

Indiana morning

We’re just enjoying a relaxing Sunday. No matter what day you’re reading this, I hope your day is relaxing, as well.

TIL (Today I Learned): The thick white rind on the outside of a wheel of brie cheese is actually mold, Penicillum candidum.

generations in the kitchen

generations in the kitchen

We had a discussion while in the kitchen today about generations.

Generation Z…

My granddaughter is a zoomer – Generation Z. She’s not happy with that – she thinks they’re known for being stupid. Not so… they’re the first generation never to know the world without the internet, they value diversity and finding their own unique identity. That sounds about right for her — maybe not zoomers as a whole.

Millennial…

My son is a stereotypical millennial. Termed digital natives, they are ‘generation ME.’ They prefer experiences and instant gratification. In a study by Microsoft, 77% of this generation answered yes to this statement, “When nothing is occupying my attention, the first thing I do is reach for my phone.” 🙄

reach for phone

Boomer…

Then you have me — a Boomer. I’m actually a Boomer II but am still described as the generation with a strong and focused worth ethic.

That’s why I spent the weekend feeding people and cleaning up after them. Miss Zoomer was too busy on the Internet and Mr. Millennial only cared about food in his belly — and his phone. 😉

TIL (Today I Learned): The pre-game military fly-overs conducted while the Star Spangled Banner plays at pro sports events is actually a planned training run for flight teams and doesn’t cost “extra” as many speculate, but is already factored into the annual training budget.

And… the Bengals lost today. Perry is heartbroken. 🙁
