that big pooofy hair

Sep 20, 2013

When I was in grade school I remember wondering why my Mom had her hair done every week. Big hair was “in” and she had blonde, long, poofy hair. She bought new clothes that actually matched and wore make-up. She had contacts because she thought she looked better without glasses. I remember wondering why. She was DECREPIT after all. By the time I was in high school, Mom was only really old (no longer quite as frail in my youthful eyes) — and to my surprise, she STILL cared about her appearance. Good-bye poofy hair… hello bowl cut (that she kept until just a few months ago).

Funny, at that time Mom was younger than I am today.

By probably close to 10 years!!!

She was about my age

Perceptions certainly change. It’s like going to your high school’s basketball game and thinking the “men” look big and strong… and then going to a high school game five years later and noticing the team is made up of nothing but little boys. Those awful glasses and my VW (in the photo’s background) are back in style, and today, I don’t perceive Mom to be nearly as old as I thought she was all those years ago. That’s messed up. Isn’t it?
