time capsule tuesday – 06 Red, White & Blue

Jun 14, 2011

I know I posted Red, White & Blue Festival photos last week for Time Capsule Tuesday, but I found a few more oldies-but-goodies! These photos were taken at the festival in 2006…not as old as last week, but certainly just as good.

I’m pretty sure my buddy, Alisa, took these photos. I never use a date/time stamp, and I was in several of the photos that I chose not to share. Thanks, Alisa!

I was a parade judge in 2006, and like other years prior, I missed most of the happenings. As a parade judge, you begin by walking (or riding in a golf cart) down Bard Street (at least it was Bard Street in 2006), looking at and critiquing all the floats and horses and tractors and every entrant who participates. After marking your opinions and favorites in the categories provided, you then compare your notes with those of the other judges, and try to agree upon a few to receive awards, when so many of them deserve recognition.

Sound hard? It always was. But not as difficult as getting back to the end of the parade route with our final tallies. In 2006, the golf carts disappeared, and we literally had to sprint part of the way down Moore Street and up Preston to get there before the first of the parade passed in front of the many spectators gathered at the school.

In 2006, David Schill (photo left) announced those who received top honors at the end of the parade route. I wonder if he worried that we would get there on time.

But before the parade ever starts, those who want to participate first have to check in and get a number. Five years ago, Kendra England Smith was in charge of the parade and Annette King was her right-hand person. Pretty ladies always up the number of entries. (Sure do miss you, Kendra.)

Patrick Sweazy won something. I can’t remember if it was “most patriotic” or something else. I do remember he had a lot of fun!

Denise Maxie was crowned Pork Princess of 2005 (a title I’m sure she wished would’ve been renamed something else), and is only one example of royalty with a ride that year. Derrick waves to the crowd as a passenger, and I see Curt Kovener snapping photos in the background of this image for the local paper.

The Adams Funeral Home float was the overall parade winner that year. I don’t know how many trophies Mark and Leslie have accumulated, but they were all deserved.

After the 2006 parade, folks gathered to talk (and probably diss the parade judges!) and ended up on crothersville.net — and again here. I see a few people I know in the photo below — Ed Hall, Bige Doyle, Carl & Lil Edwards, and even Keith Hill, who is no longer with us.

I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past, and I also hope you enjoyed Crothersville’s own 2011 Red, White & Blue festival.
