you better watch out

Dec 16, 2012

Yesterday, I received an email that looked EXACTLY like a credit card statement notice. I know what phishing emails look like, how they work, and what their purpose is — but this email was sent to the correct email account I use for this particular card (I have 3 email addresses I use all the time for different purposes) and it even contained the last 4 digits of my credit card number along with my full name and middle initial (that I never, EVER use except for legal purposes)! When hovering over the text link for the cardholder, the REAL link revealed was to a web URL in Denmark.

Here’s what is scary… I haven’t even USED the card once this whole year! I don’t even think I used it in 2011 for crying out loud. So please, don’t tell me that I ordered something online and my private information ended up getting hacked, because I don’t believe that’s correct.

The guy who could barely speak English let me know my account was safe although they were uncertain as to how the information was obtained for the phishing scam — and they would monitor the account. I closed it instead. The cardholder isn’t some generic company… it’s one of the world’s largest commercial banks. I wonder if I’m a leftover from their hacking of 2011…

Be careful what you click within ANY email, you guys — even if it looks legitimate. You better watch out…
