story of a significant water crisis

Last week, the Town of Crothersville let residents know they’d be working on a project that required turning off water the following Tuesday — at least 3 days notice. The alert came out on the town’s app and multiple FaceBook reminders were posted. There was plenty of time for people to get ready — fill jugs with water for dogs and coffee, and the bathtub to flush their toilets.

Jackson County Water customers didn’t get the same courtesy.

We’re ready to take a stand!

Yesterday morning, I had a voice message at 8:50 AM from Jackson County Water Authority that our water would be off intermittently for repair starting within 10 minutes and we would be under a boil alert afterward. The Pesky neighbors didn’t even get notified. There’s nothing on the JC Water website or on social media regarding the outage.

Jackson County Water buys water from C’ville. This was a planned project and they knew last week — but unlike the town, they kept it a secret. Starting at 3:00 PM, they started telling the town that they’d be done in a hour — town customers were inconvenienced by about 3 hours.

At about 10:00 PM, I called JC Water’s answering service. Dude was unaware of any projects, but would pass my concern to their “on call” person. Mr. On-Call called me back and said water would be on within the hour. We finally got water at about 11:45 PM

There’s water everywhere – but not a drop from faucets!

lawnmower stuck again

Although I mowed the day before the rain started, grass here at the barndo looked like it was on steroids. I had to call on Mr. Pesky’s towing service yet again… because the lawn mower wasn’t coming out of where I had it. ARG!

Now you know: There is a place called the Northwest Angle. It’s a coastal lake area in Minnesota that is cut off from rest of the USA because one side of the lake belongs to Canada. The area was born out of miscalculating the borders in the US-British border treaty of 1783. 149 people live there.

We decided to get pancakes yesterday for breakfast. Pretty happy at the thought of eating something I never fix myself at home, and Perry was ready to belly up and might have been even happier than I was.

It was close to noon thirty when we pulled into the Cracker Barrel parking lot. There was not one single parking spot to be had. We opted for Denny’s and a grand slam breakfast.

An hour later…

Our breakfast finally arrived and our pancakes were ice cold. Butter sat there on the top without even a little bit of melting. The little sausage links were equally as bad — so overcooked there’s no way you could cut through them without a steak knife or a chain saw.

I saw a classmate there when we arrived (Trina Vail). They were still waiting on their food as we were leaving… over an hour and a half later. I hope their food was better than ours. 🙁

Downtown in the Ville:

I don’t hit C’ville often — just to go to the bank once a month or so. I took a photo in case you’ve not been there for awhile either, or in case you’ve moved away and wonder what the town center looks like in 2026.

Now you know: In 2018 there was a diplomatic spat between India and Pakistan due to accusations that diplomats were ringing each other’s doorbells at 3.00am, then running away.

The barndo is not that far from downtown, but I rarely even pass through. Most of the time, we go north instead of south for groceries, doctor appointments and more. We did pass through the other night though, just before dark. The moon was already set in the sky, and the street with lit with a golden glow.

The historic building has yet to be rehabbed.

The dilapidated building on the corner in the center of town is an Indiana landmark. Built in 1891, it was originally an apothecary and pharmacy with the Odd Fellows Lodge on the upper floor. I remember when the library was housed there before construction on their new building was completed and dedicated in 1992.

In 2015, Indiana Landmarks took on the building. They used the funds set aside by the Town for demolition to fix the roof, rebuild the windows and make other repairs. In 2022, it was then sold to a Scott County couple who said they planned to rehab the upstairs as apartments and lease the first floor as a restaurant.

3 years later and there’s certainly no restaurant.

I can’t claim there aren’t apartments upstairs because I don’t know. I can promise you there isn’t a restaurant downstairs. I assume the proceeds from the sale bypassed local government, leaving the old building still standing… still dilapidated… and was invested by Indiana Landmarks to further their mission somewhere outside of good ole’ C’ville. 😏

No matter the conditions of the buildings, my hometown community is so much better than what’s outlined in Wikipedia.

Now you know: The Crothersville Library had a book brigade in 1992 to move materials from one end of the block to the new building on the other end of the block. “We couldn’t have done it without our community volunteers!”

invisibility is my super power — what’s yours?

invisibility is my super power — what’s yours?

A few days ago I cut just over 4″ off the back of my hair and about 2.5 inches from the front. I thought it made a pretty darned big difference, but not a single person has said one thing about it.

I’m pretty sure I’m invisible.

I’m obviously not a ghost as they can’t be seen in mirrors because mirrors only reflect the physical world. Right?

Do I look like a McKain or a Wilson?

I’ve always been told by others that I look like the McKain side of the family. It’s likely because of my dark eyes, hair and complexion. Mom was blonde (she’s still about 10% blonde and 90% gray), has fair skin and light colored eyes (gray? blue?). But Mom’s side of the family disagreed.

They often called me “Stella,” saying I looked just like her. Stella was the sister of my Mom’s Mom — my Nanny. (Of Nanny’s siblings, Opal was the oldest, then Stella, Nanny was the middle sister, then Lois, and finally Kak.) While I’m sure I’ve seen photos of Stella before now, I guess I never really paid much attention to them. Yesterday, a photo was shared on FB from the Crothersville Alumni Banquet of 1938. I sent it to Mom because she likes looking at those type things and she asked if I recognized Stella. Nope. I didn’t.

In the front row, just to the right of the candle, is Palmer Kovener and his wife, Stella Wilson, the great aunt of my brother and me.

I’m not sure which side of my family I look like — I think I’m simply invisible. 😉

Now you know: In the USA, there can be 450 insect parts and nine rodent hairs in every 16 oz. box of spaghetti. 🤢

I’m writing this after midnight so it’s officially Saturday, but what I’m sharing is from last night — which was less than an hour ago. Confused yet? 😉

Crothersville is buried.

Snowfall started around noon and it was beautiful! I’m feeding every bird in Jackson County. I have 2 feeders and they require refilling at least once a day.

Perry left work early and beat the bad roads, but Ben said US 31 was 20 mph tops around 3 hours later. By nightfall, we had quite a bit more snow on top of what we already had. It’s still snowing here. For snow totals in this contest, we take first place.

still snowing

Perry’s nephew, Coty, lives in Kentucky just south of Warsaw and they’ve gotten about 1/2 of what we have (which is double Katie or Scott). He sent videos and I simply don’t have the energy to convert them for web display. You’ll have to take my word for it that he’s in 2nd place for this snow total contest.

Perry’s Mom in Rising Sun hits 3rd place for snow totals.

Perry’s Mom loves snow even more than I do. She’s so thrilled and sent at least 20 photos. Here’s one…

Katie got snow at her home in Sevierville this time around.

Katie missed the snowstorm we had earlier in the week and was excited for this snow. She was picked up for work and was only there about 3 hours before her ride (also her boss) picked her up and closed their store. She took this photo and snickered over the panic because their accumulation was nothing close to ours. Evidently they aren’t as prepared to deal with snow as we are in Indiana.

She’s tied for 4th with Scott in Fort Wayne.

Tennessee snow

Fort Wayne may be way north of the Ville, but they haven’t gotten dumped on either.

I figured Scott would have more snow at his place since he’s 200 miles north of here, but no! Just a few inches from both storms combined.

I love me some snow… but I’m about over it for awhile.

Now you know: In 2020, Costco stopped selling Chaokoh coconut milk after reports of forced monkey labor were revealed. Monkeys were allegedly forced to pick coconuts, chained, caged, and had their teeth pulled to prevent resistance. Costco halted purchases and demanded audits to ensure humane practices.
