a little nonsense

a little nonsense

As summer is on the horizon and the weather around here is absolutely gorgeous — and because I just about killed myself the past two days — I’m reminded of a quote:

“A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men.” – Roald Dahl

Ole’ Roald was a British author and fighter pilot and he died in 1990. If he would have written this in today’s time, using the word “men” would’ve been substituted with ‘people’ or ‘humans’ or anything other than simply MEN. Because I’m not gender sensitive… the use of “men” is ok with me. I know it means women too… and that means ME.

So although I’m working, here’s my nonsensical view today…

my view from the sunroom

plant those peas straight

plant those peas straight

It’s a lazy Sunday… barely 32 degrees F outside. While sunny, it’s simply too cold to go for a walk or do anything other than stay inside. We’re all resting up and preparing for the upcoming week… planning to apply (personally and professionally) the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote:

The sower may mistake and sow his peas crookedly; the peas make no mistake, but come up and show his line.

Every choice made (or not made) — every action taken (or not taken) — results in a consequence. There are times we all trudge forward without thinking… really thinking… about consequences.  Pay attention when you plant those peas, you guys. Unless you’re a dog. The whole “what if” thing doesn’t apply to dogs because they don’t have the mental bandwidth to understand the process. Sadly, neither do some people.

The difference; however, is that dogs don’t have a ton of important choices confronting them as humans do — not many peas to sow.

When this little quote is remembered just at the right time, it makes me smile. It’s my reminder that although others may think I don’t notice — I do.

hate is too great a burden

Martin Luther King Jr.’s words remain as inspiring today as they were when he lived — and just as relevant.

life is too long

I was thinking this morning about something my brother told me years and years ago: “Life is too LONG to be miserable.” You always hear the phrase about life being too short — but think about it. If just for a moment… think about it.

“Life is too LONG to be miserable.”

When my wise sibling first uttered those words to me I was in a really bad spot in life. Sure, he said many other things as well that were meant as advice, (Run! He’s gonna’ kill you! BASTARD!), but they only applied to my then dire situation. “Life is too LONG to be miserable” is always applicable because being miserable is… well, it’s freaking miserable.

life is too long

There’s only one other phrase I remember even more often and more vividly — it was told to me by my Grandmother. “It’s a poor hen that can’t scratch for one little chicken.” She was right, you guys.

So if you’re reading this and you’re just staying miserable in life because you think you have responsibilities that require it — remember that life is too LONG to be miserable, and any old hen should be able to scratch for one (or more than one!!) little chicken. (I’m pretty sure this could also apply to scratching roosters and really over the hill hens — like ME — too.)
