In yesterday’s post, I added a photo of my favorite brother in the whole world. Yes, it was in black and white. I’ve gotten a couple messages today asking why I didn’t choose to post a color photo instead. I always aim to please — so here is one for your viewing pleasure.
Still, I love black and white photography and it is absolutely increasing in popularity. It’s “hip”.
Photos in black and white do not have to attract the viewer with a play of color. Instead, composition, lighting, perspective and the context of the shot is what is most important. They are clean and crisp, heighten the emotional connection and accentuate the depth of field.
Photos that are not saturated with color are timeless and elegant — but yet contemporary. Now how else can you combine those three things?
Black and white photos are back in vogue! But evidently so are the glasses that look exactly like those my Grandfather wore a long, long time ago.

Today was looooooong and filled with so many ideas that my brain simply could not hold one more thing. Matter of fact, it slammed shut and stopped functioning.
Brainstorming ideas is sort of like packing a suitcase! When you pack, you throw all kinds of stuff in there but still want more. No matter how much you mash and smash, some of what you’d love to take with you simply will not fit. Full is full.
Same with the brain. Once you’ve reached that day’s capacity for learning, you just can’t stuff anything else in there. But here’s the difference…when you see the suitcase isn’t going to hold any more, you can take out some of the things you’ve already put in there and replace it with things more important. Not so with the brain.
Besides tossing around ideas, I took time to snap a photo as well. While planning new projects is fun and exciting — getting an awesome shot is instant gratification.
I think I should probably get a raise from Scott McKain — after all, that’s a great photo! Don’t you think?

A friend sent me an email today filled with facts and figures insofar as US tax dollars that support illegal immigrants just in Los Angeles alone. The email subject was ‘Just One State’, and you’ve probably gotten it too at some time or another, since it originated a pretty long time ago. As I’m reading it, I get more and more ticked off — especially in light of today’s challenging economic climate. Right before I forward it to all my friends, I decide to make sure that it’s not just a bunch of crap that someone has made up. You know the drill, you think Paul Harvey REALLY did say it, and you’ll choke on a pea at dinner unless you forward it to 1000 of your closest friends.
I found that in this particular email, some of the statistics were a bit outdated, and some of the data is subject to interpretation (like ALL statistics, right?), but when I think about it as a “whole”, I can’t help but say “wow” in a deep breath to myself. Here’s one reason why:
“Although illegal aliens are not generally eligible to collect public welfare benefits, an illegal alien may receive benefits under the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and Food Stamps programs on behalf of his or her U.S. citizen child. (Any child born in the United States is considered a U.S. citizen, regardless of the parents’ immigration status.) A 1997 General Accounting Office (GAO) report determined that in 1995 households headed by illegal aliens received a total of $700 million in AFDC benefits and $430 million in Food Stamps.”
For me, this information brings new meaning to Obama’s words in his inauguration speech, “The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works.”
