Not long ago, I posted about Skype, a VoIP option for phone and/or video connections and text messaging. I talked about how great the video was even though it was from Indiana to Korea, how inexpensive calls are (FREE to other Skype users), and how impressed that I was with their service.
Yesterday, Skype released a NEW application. Skype became available for not only the iPhone, but this nifty little application also works on the iPod Touch!! What does that mean?
It means that you can make calls through your iPhone’s G3 connection via Skype and not rack up one minute of service time. It also means that every iPod touch user can now sign in and text message other Skype users!
Although a microphone hack is already available, the Skype application will not yet work with the iPod touch for calls. SkypeOut phone calls are to an actual phone number, (which is why it works in conjunction with iPhone’s phone number). The iPod touch doesn’t have an inbound phone number, and until a native AJAX VoIP application comes out, you won’t be making VoIP calls from the iPod touch. Still, you should be aware that if you think your child is simply listening to music on their iPod touch — they might be texting friends as well.
Sign up for Skype and give it a try! It’s awesome for text messaging from your computer — and now is right out there for use with your iPhone and iPod touch!
