I was reading an article in the MINI International Magazine and LOVED a statement made insofar as Facebook and Twitter. It said:
“Facebook and Twitter are a little like chocolate ice cream: nutritionally speaking, there’s no need for it, but lots of people love it and would hate to have to give it up.”
With such an abundance of information at our fingertips, I think the description is a perfect fit.
I also enjoyed reading the stats they provided–
On Facebook’s 6th birthday (February 2010), it had over 400 million active users (double from 2009), and over 2.5 billion photos are uploaded every month. Each user has an average of 130 friends, posts an average of 25 times per month, and spends an average 55 minutes every day on Facebook. Twitter is less personal and 5% of the 12 million users are responsible for 75% of all Twitter activity.
Reading this made me think about how much time we spend involved in the lives of our Facebook friends. I find it interesting that some who complain about small-town thinking and rampant gossip in small towns (like the Ville) will also spend hours reading personal information about others — AND sharing their own.
If Twitter and Facebook were truly ice cream, how much would you weigh exactly?
Right now, my favorite modern connection would have to be Facetime…
