every sunday night

Dec 12, 2010

When I was a kid, every Sunday night at 7:00 PM I was planted in front of the TV to watch The Wonderful World of Disney. Now that same TV series changed names and stations throughout the time I would’ve been a loyal viewer because “Disney” remained a weekly program for more than 30 years. I can remember (oh yah, I’m old) when it was hosted by ole’ Walt himself. Watching Disney selections was family time, and was what we always did the night before the first school day of the week.

Remember in the movie, Rainman, how savant Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), always had to watch Jeopardy? One of my favorite quotes of the movie, “‘Course I got Jeopardy! at five o’clock. I watch Jeopardy!” could have a few word substitutions and be a phrase used by most everyone I knew back then. Sunday night at 7:00 PM was Disney!

So I’m sharing this memory with Perry and was pretty amazed to hear that he and his siblings (time warp ahead some 10 years) spent their Sunday nights in that same manner! But now you have the Disney Channel and about a bajillion other stations to choose from, and the 7:00 PM local slots are 60 Minutes, football, America’s Funniest Home Videos and Running Wilde. So I have to wonder, what will my granddaughter have as a constant “family memory” that’s similar to my ‘Sunday night family date night’?

What will she have that she really looks forward to on that last night of the weekend before preparing for the school week ahead?
