“We are going to take a trip out West.” < ----we've all heard that said. Right? "Let's go out East." < ----- no one says "out East”. Why?
My regular “out East” crew were “down South” racing and missed the boat (pun intended). While it just wasn’t the same without Jerilyn & Tader, we didn’t let their absence keep us home. NO!
The drive from the Ville through Madison to Florence, Indiana is gorgeous anytime of the year. Most of it anyway. I’m always fascinated by the barges, lazily rolling down the river, and wonder if their operators are warm and cozy when chilly winds blow and I’m comfortable in the car.
But I also notice the river is lined with trailers — house trailers and camping trailers litter the water’s edge in little ‘trailer cities’ one right after the other. It takes away from the beauty really. Unless, of course, you’re staying in one of the trailers inside one of those little ‘trailer cities’ and are up-close and personal with the north bank of the Ohio River.
Charles Kuralt (the American journalist who you might remember for his “On the Road” segments that ran for a good long time on CBS) once wrote, “For me the princess of the rivers is unquestionably Madison. It is the most beautiful river town in America.”
Dude must’ve been talking about downtown Madison — or maybe he didn’t see the trailer cities, or possibly visited before they were erected.
