Mom was fond of telling my brother, Scott, and me that we should always “make hay while the sun is shining”. As a kid, I thought it was another way for her to nag about whatever it was that I wasn’t doing right that very second that she wanted done. Of course, I then said it to my son. There’s that implication that the sun will not always shine, and you can’t make hay when it doesn’t. Scary!
I’ve read business articles that quote that same saying and expand upon it until there’s nothing left — and they all cause my brain to work so much harder than necessary to figure out. Isn’t it simply stated to remind you to make the most of your opportunities while you have the chance?
But it could mean — making hay (like doing your job) should be done (outside) while the sun is shining. Because it might rain tomorrow. At least that’s what Perry told me.
