I remember being a kid without air-conditioning. Yes, I am that old! It’s crazy to think about now, as I can’t imagine being without it. When the electric went off for about an hour, I wasn’t worried about the stuff in the freezer thawing out or the items in the refrigerator going bad — I was only worried about how hot it would get inside the house, and how uncomfortable I was going to be in a few hours.
To my relief, the electric was back on in about an hour, but it did make me think about the nights spent at my Nanny & Pap-pa’s when I was young. I remember when it was extremely hot and humid, she would make my brother and I a pallet in the living room in front of the door. The screen door was the only thing that protected us from (then) non-existent burglars or prowlers, and every window was unlocked and open to allow whatever breeze might be present to flow through the house.
I remember the roar of the attic fan. Not only did my grandparents have oscilating fans to circulate the hot air within the rooms of their small house, (on stands of varying heights), they also had a fan in the attic that would suck more hot air in. I really don’t remember if we had air-conditioning at home or not at that time; however, I don’t have any awesome campout memories from our house, so I’m assuming we at least had a window unit.
I hope y’all are staying cool! I looks like the hot humid days are going to stick around for awhile longer.
