Hens and chicks (or chickens) is one plant that can seriously live through anything. Those pesky neighbors have a little red wagon full of them, and gave me a start in an awesome terra-cotta planter. The little red wagon stays outside even in the harsh Indiana winters (while the peskies are basking in the sun in Florida). Unlike those peskies, the hens and chicks take it in stride — matter of fact, they need a cold-dormant season to be healthy.
The best news of all is this plant is drought tolerant, and for those of you living in or near the Ville right now, you understand how important that is. I’m planning to wait a season before starting any chicks in another location to give this planter a chance to fill up just a bit more — or, I might just sneak down to the little red wagon and snatch some chicks right away from the hens (and peskies). Just because I can.
