froggy went a courtin’

Jul 23, 2012

I remember sitting in my grandmother’s lap in a rocking chair while she sang to me. She didn’t have a perfect voice, but it sure sounded good to me. I hope Coco feels the same. Her Mamma has a simply amazing voice and I sound like… well, like a grandma. Funny… trying to think of songs to sing, I found myself starting out this tune and couldn’t for the life of me remember but a few of the first lines… “Froggy went a courtin’ and he did ride uh huh”… I remember Miss Mousey and Uncle Rat but went blank after that.

A short Google search later and I find out that Froggy wanted to marry Miss Mousey and even though Uncle Rat ridiculed the sacred union they planned a wedding and got married. But get this!!

A cat eats them all at the wedding!

Seriously?? Nanny… what were you thinking? And that song has remained in my subconscious (minus the tragic ending I no doubt blocked to save my psyche from being forever scarred) for 50 years. The other song I remember started with, “Poor baby bat… He’s under my hat.” No google search for lyrics for me. I simply don’t want to know.

Nanny’s been gone for awhile now and I sure do miss her. I found the photo below (taken in 2008) while digging through my stash and thought it was pretty fitting to include with these thoughts. See that impish grin on her face and the goofy look on mine? At that exact moment she was probably thinking about that damn cat eating poor ole’ froggy and miss mousey and even how uncle rat met his demise and what a gullible kid I was to think it ended happily — even after all those years.
