an organized workspace?

Sep 11, 2012

I am a roller-coaster organizer. Some days you would think I’m the most organized and in-control person you’d ever want to meet. Other days, you would know I’m a mess.

I write myself notes on a pad kept on my desk. I write myself notes on my online calendar. And in a notes app. And on my hand. Things are so hectic around here, if I don’t write every little detail down the very exact second it happens, it’s gone when the next big thang comes along. Email is easier — I have a trail to follow. Calls are more personal, but it’s easier to forget what you agreed to do, or prove what you said you couldn’t do. Our team uses Basecamp (LOVE! ❤) for project management and online collaboration, and have its app, Lodge, for our phones.

What inspired today’s sharing is an article I read — 12 steps to a more organized workspace. Even if you tackle 1 of the 12 steps, you’re better off than before. I’m going to start at the end. #12 is me…

12. Be decisive
Every paper that’s out represents an unmade decision. Your decision doesn’t have to be on the paper’s final resting place, but it does have to result in it either getting trashed, acted on, or filed properly in a place where you’re 100 percent sure you’ll be able to find it again.

More organization… more time for the good stuff. And, there’s probably not going to be any more of this going on before next year. Glad I didn’t miss it!
