There are a ton of people downsizing their lives and tiny houses are popping up everywhere — many measure only 300 square feet or less. I agree that simple isn’t a bad thing… and I’ve even threatened to move in a blue house trailer so far in the wilderness it would take hip waders to get to me — but 300 square feet is about the size of my bed.
I can’t imagine the challenges!
I also can’t imagine purchasing a shipping container home on Amazon for $36k (plus $4k shipping) — or an upgraded tiny home that’s about $70k (including shipping) that’s a mere 399 square feet. At $175 bucks a square foot, I don’t get it when the national average is $125, AND you have to climb a ladder to lay your head down at night.
Heck, I’ve often wondered if I could move back to the house I lived in for years just because I now NEED lots of cabinet space.
I’ll admit, I have one room here that is only used when the dogs take a shortcut to beat me to the back door. I could give that up no problem, but all four bedrooms and three baths are used consistently. Sure, I could move to a home with a couple bedrooms and a bath and 1/2 and I’d be just fine — and I may do just that some day — but I’m pretty sure I’m too old to join the tiny house fad.
For example… a motorhome is great; a fifth wheel camper is nice; and a pop-up trailer would do in a pinch. A tiny home to me would be like sleeping in a tent — no, LIVING in a tent with climate control. I simply can’t fathom it.
Besides, I’d have to downsize dogs too — and just the mention of a tiny house and Dharma’s giving me the cold shoulder.
