Ann Reeves Jarvis helped start “Mothers‘ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children — and she always considered Mother’s Day her intellectual and legal property. Then, in 1916, good ole’ Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day as a national holiday in the US to honor mothers. Ann was ticked off!
“If the American people are not willing to protect Mother’s Day from the hordes of money schemers that would overwhelm it with their schemes, then we shall cease having a Mother’s Day—and we know how.”
She might’ve known how to stop it… but since we are still honoring mothers on the 2nd Sunday in May she didn’t get that job done.
So Happy Mothers’ Work Club Day to all mothers — especially mine.
