Have I got a story for you — it’s long, so buckle up! My nephew (my sister-in-law Tammy’s oldest son) is married with FOUR kids. He has a good job and goes to church every Sunday. He was arrested on Tuesday night for conversion (theft… sort of). “He” was picked up and charged with stealing a bag of dog food from a Meijer store. He was released and a court date was mailed to his address.
A few facts…
- He and his wife purchased a new home a few months back.
- He doesn’t have any pets… no dogs… not even a goldfish.
- The Meijer store robbed was where he used to work.
- He didn’t do it.
- The “real” person was his neighbor who had stolen an old ID and offered it up to police upon arrest.
The paperwork with the court date was mailed to his old address (taken from the old ID) and he didn’t get it. Of course, he didn’t make it to the court date he didn’t know existed.
A no-bond warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was informed by phone there was a warrant for failure to appear. He explains he didn’t get a notice and it wasn’t him.
He was told, “just come in and let’s get this figured out.”
He obeyed, arrived at the police department and was arrested on the spot.
He spent the night in jail and had an initial hearing the next morning. By this time, Meijer had confirmed his story with video surveillance, the charges were dismissed and are pending expungement. He was released with the simple words, “you are free to go.” He didn’t even get a “sorry about that.” He missed a day of work.
If he’d have told the police to speak to his lawyer instead of falling for the lie, it would’ve been resolved without him spending a night in a jail cell.
This could happen to anybody… it could happen to you! 😬
You know what else could happen to you? You could get what you wish for — like me.
I’ve been pounding away about how I wanted warm, sunny days to make swimming optimal. Well… we have a heat advisory now and my A/C units — both upstairs AND downstairs — totally took a shit.
My HVAC dudes showed up promptly enough, but they need parts to do the repair. With supply chain issues, they’re not sure how long I’ll be sweating it out. 🥵
Fun fact for the day: In 2009, Bob Dylan was detained in New Jersey after he wandered into the yard of a home that had a “For Sale” sign on it. Not recognizing Bob Dylan, the home’s occupants became spooked by his appearance, and called 911. He was then taken to his tour bus where he had to verify his identity.
