The sansevieria — better known as mother-in-law tongue or snake plant — originally came from Africa. I started out with one sprig in a small pot but now these suckers are taking over!
It was warm enough yesterday to repot outside.
The overflowing plant in the photo above is one of my smaller specimens. I have another pot much bigger than it is, and it’s already full as well.
I stopped repotting once I had four nice-sized starts only because I ran out of pots and soil. The Pesky neighbors suggested I put a sign out front offering to sell sansevieria straight out of Africa… right after they get theirs for free. 😉
My good luck with this plant type is because they require little care.
Snake plants need little watering and sunlight to thrive. They grow fast in soil with good drainage and are resistant to insects, heat, and warm climates. A potted snake plant should only be watered once every two weeks (or once a month during winter) as over-watering can cause them to die.
Basically, you can put them anywhere and even forget to water them. Let me know if you’d like a start… or 10.
Now you know: Cotton candy is called “old lady’s hair” in India and Greece.
