when workers don’t want to work

Aug 23, 2024

Yesterday, Perry was at work by 6:00 AM. By 2:30 PM, his entire 2nd shift crew had called in sick. All had different ailments… from a migraine to a medicine regulation challenge… to other issues in between. He left the business after working alone for 18 hours straight, just in time to see Katie.

It's Katie! Yay!

So today is Friday but it feels like Saturday.

Because ole’ Perry pulled a double yesterday, he’s off today. That’s great, but it makes one wonder how so many just happened to call in on the exact same shift on the same day.

Regular employees in his retail business aren’t paid a huge wage, but it’s a good bit above minimum wage in Indiana. The company also offers decent insurance coverage and bonuses.

But the very nature of the work environment is a challenge — I get it. They often must deal with difficult customers and work hours often include weekends, evenings, and holidays. They miss a whole lot of this:

I’m thrilled it’s not me managing a retail crew.

After growing up in a grocery store, my retail days were basically non-existent. I don’t think I’d have been a good retail manager. I know for certain I wouldn’t now — and I doubt it would’ve been different even 30 years-ago. I don’t have the patience for it.

Now you know: Alanis Morrisette was dropped by her record label after disappointing sales of her first two albums. Her third album, Jagged Little Pill, is the 13th highest selling album of all time worldwide.
