Working on the other side of the speaking industry — hiring speakers as opposed to booking one — is a learning experience. No matter what it is you do, the way others in your business handle business can be eye opening. I’ve learned to calmly say, “I’m not comfortable with that,” and “I’ll let you know when I decide.” Ah yes… I’ve repeated those lines 100 thousand times in the past couple weeks.
Set clear boundaries.
My biggest takeaway so far is to not over-explain. Too much justification invites more push. I’ve learned to stay calm and keep my tone steady and neutral — which is the total opposite when I’m on the other side of this business. It’s like flipping a switch from helpful (NOT PUSHY) and passionate me — to dry and calculating (not letting pressure dictate my responses) me.
Even Hugo doesn’t know which “ME” is going to show up next. 🙂

The rain is over for now… finally…
Roads are flooded about everywhere locally from all the crazy rain we’ve had this past week and weekend. Mr. Pesky said he measured just over 7″ in his rain gauge even after he took it inside before the predicted hail. My friend, Julie, said she had right at 8.5″ in Scipio — about 25 miles from the barndo.
No matter the measurement… there are flood alerts everywhere and my yard looks like a mud pie. So do my floors with 3 dogs. 🥴
Now you know: When Carrie Fisher told Harrison Ford she was going to publish her journals & reveal they had an affair (Ford was married) while filming Star Wars (1977), Ford raised his finger & said “Lawyer!” Fisher said he could read it beforehand & take anything out. She sent it to him but never heard back.
