to be old and healthy is a blessing

Sitting on the deck under an umbrella yesterday afternoon to cool off while mowing, I was thinking about how lucky I am to be old and still feel pretty darned good.

I’ll be the first to admit my back isn’t great, but it’s not as bad as when I had surgery 11 years ago. Although I can still log 10,000 or so steps a day, weed-eating (especially the ditch where I reach and twist) is getting harder. Nothing is as easy as it was 30 years ago, but I know I’m blessed — and grateful — for my health.

These thoughts are because a classmate is struggling.

I have a friend that’s at St. Vincent Hospital with a broken femur and a head injury from a fall. There’s talk of her needing a nursing home stay afterward. When I talked to her on the phone before it happened, she said, “I even cooked hamburgers last week.” All I could think of at the time was how crazy it was that she thought 15 minutes at the stove was an accomplishment. Of course, now I feel like a jerk.

Young or old… we never know when our own health could take a turn. Instead of hating that I have to mow all the time, I should instead be more grateful that I can do it. When you’re healthy, it’s sure easy to take it for granted, isn’t it?

I’m going to do my best to appreciate more and complain less. 🙂

Now you know: In December 2020, GoDaddy tricked employees into thinking they had earned a bonus of $650. Employees were then told they had failed a phishing test and were required to do social engineering training. After media criticism, the company apologized to its staff, but did not offer actual bonuses.
