the peony problem and a mean woodpecker

May 20, 2025

Here we are, a week after I talked about not having the first peony bloom… and I still don’t have a single peony bloom. I cut one bud, brought in inside and put it in water.

If the article I read is correct, I should have a bloom in 8-48 hours from yesterday morning around 9:00 AM, but still nothing yet. Do you guys have blooming peonies? I’m beginning to wonder if my favorite flower hates me. 🙁

Boris, the meanest woodpecker in Jackson County!

In years past, my hummingbirds coexisted with the woodpecker population just fine. But not this year! We have this one woodpecker, now named Boris, that terrorizes the smaller hummingbirds wanting to dine at the barndo’s feeders. He runs them off and won’t let them eat.

I’m not yet sure what to do about the angry dude, but I don’t appreciate bullies. Picking on stuff littler than you isn’t nice — even if you’re a woodpecker.

More rain… maybe storms later today.

The good news is I won’t have to mow. The bad news is, the dogs will make sure dirty footprints are everywhere, and without constant supervision, they’ll wipe their wet bodies on the walls down the hallway. Yay!

The severe weather threat here is slight — the dog problem threat is elevated.

Now you know: The music video for Soul Asylum’s “Runaway Train” led to 21 missing people being found.
