dogs get better treatment in the ER than humans

Sep 23, 2025

I mentioned yesterday that Mom’s doggo, Mozzie, was sick and they made a trip to the dog hospital’s ER. They chose to go to Louisville rather than Indy (where we took Hugo shortly after he became a family member). Costs are pretty darned similar when comparing dogs to humans in an emergency room — it’s EXPENSIVE — thousands not hundreds.

But we sure love our dogs! Even when they’re gross with slimy spit.

Merida is gross!

Veterinary hospitals treat their patients better than human hospitals.

  • No waiting forever to see a vet for Mozzie girl. She got right in.
    • When taking Mom to the ER, we waited in the waiting room with hacking sickies for quite a while, and then waited again in the treatment room even longer before she was seen.
  • There weren’t other dogs on stretchers outside the treatment rooms either.
    • They had other humans stacked all over the place at Seymour’s ER the night Mom was there.
  • Mozzie had many tests and it didn’t take over a couple hours.
    • Mom had many tests too, but there was zero reason it should’ve taken 9 hours.
  • Mozzie was sent home with a diagnosis and a treatment plan.
    • When Mom left, she was still experiencing the same thing she had when she went in, and the only instruction was to make appointments with her cardiologist and family doctor.

I guess the moral of this story is that ‘leading a dog’s life’ isn’t so bad… at least when it comes to healthcare. 😉

Now you know: In 2011, Sgt. James Hackemer, who had lost his legs, was allowed to board the ‘Ride of Steel’ roller coaster at Darien Lake Theme Park in New York. The ride’s training manual and posted rules explicitly stated that riders must have two legs. He died after being ejected from the ride.
