stink bugs, green onions, and chicken poop

Oct 5, 2025

Oh! The glorious smells of rural living! Time outside in the mornings smell like stink bugs. They are everywhere. There’s an meme that says the stink bug is Indiana’s state bird, but I’m not going to share it for fear it might happen. I just breathe in, breathe out, and move on… taking in the foggy and brisk air that won’t be around by lunchtime.

Mr. Farmer isn’t my favorite person right now.

You know how I said I love harvest time and all that yaddah yaddah yaddah? Welp, I forgot about the bajillion truck loads of chicken shit he spreads on the fields after picking beans. Chicken shit smells worse than stink bugs. It’s awful now, but come the first rain it will be REALLY bad. Like everything else, this too shall pass.

While inhaling the aroma of live poultry excrement, I jumped on the zero turn danger machine and mowed the yard. The air smelled like green onions when I finished. Surprising since that smell is normally left for springtime, but sure enough, there it was.

By evening, the air was filled with the nauseating smell of a rural cocktail.

But it was pretty just the same.

Now you know: A woman had half of her brain removed when she was 8 due to a condition that caused her to have up to 150 seizures a day. Her doctors said she’d never drive, she got her license at 17. She went on to earn her bachelor’s & master’s degrees in just 5 years before becoming a speech pathologist.
