close but no cigar on the outside wood boiler

Jan 19, 2026

Dude was here and “fixed” the outside boiler pump issue. I haven’t even gotten my invoice to pay them yet and it’s already done the same exact thing. Last week, I noticed the steam/smoke rolling out the release valve on top — this time, the inside “box” full of the zoning pipes and heat exchanger sounded like we were about to blow up at any moment. The time to shut ‘er down was right about 3:30 AM.

It worked ok for a few days.

I’ll be calling the company back today after sleeping off and on most of the day yesterday to make up for the lost night. So this is what makes me worry… the tubing to check the water level is gone. It was there at the beginning of the season but disappeared, yet when the service dude said he checked the water level and it was fine, I didn’t even question how he knew that. 🤨

While I LOVE warm floors and hot water for days, this isn’t worth it, you guys. I was grumpy when taking Colette to meet her Momma (the smile was fake), and I’m still grumpy now.

Barndo heating and cooling options are limited if not done during construction.

Radiant floor heat with an outside boiler was likely a great choice for the couple 30 years younger than me when they built this place. I’ll admit that I’m spoiled and just about over this shit no matter how amazing the heat is. I’m getting prissy in my old age.

It’s time for a gas fireplace and new ultra efficient mini-split unit that effectively heats even when it’s -15° outside. There’s no place for ductwork here without too many inside modifications, so the furnace and A/C unit option is out. The price even for this upgrade is so bad it hurts and will surely leave a mark. 🙁

That’s not all that will leave a mark…

Now that I’m bitching, I might as well hit a couple other topics.

  • With the amount I spent on groceries and household items at Walmart & Sam’s Club last week alone, I could’ve bought the loveseat I want.
  • Anti-ICE protesters went inside a church and interrupted service because they BELIEVED the pastor worked with ICE. Don Lemon, former CNN anchor, was live-streaming and told the pastor the action was protected by Freedom of Speech. The DOJ is investigating under violations of federal law (the FACE Act). Seems like that’s all that ever happens… DOJ blabs about investigations but we see no arrests. I sure hope every single protester involved is prosecuted and gets much more than a small fine.

It’s moan Monday. What’s got you riled up today?

Now you know: Close, but no cigar” comes from early 20th-century U.S. carnivals and fairs where cigars were common prizes for games of skill or chance; when players nearly won but missed, barkers would say the phrase to explain the lack of a reward, making it a popular idiom for a near-miss at success.
