I’ve had a couple nights in a row where I simply didn’t get enough sleep. And rather than give it up and go to bed early last night, I was up until around 1:00 AM. I’m not sleepy… but I’m worn out from not sleeping.
You ever do this??
Humans are diurnal creatures and dogs descended from wolves.
No, I didn’t know the meaning of diurnal, but I do know how to use Google. Its definition is “of or during the day,” — basically active during the daytime. Our ancestors consolidated sleep at night for safety and efficiency. We overthink everything, and we all have some sort of stress and anxiety. Our lifestyles include caffeine, inconsistent schedules and artificial light.
Because dogs are descendants of wolves, they evolved to sleep lightly in short bursts to remain alert to potential threats or opportunities. They’re more instinct-driven and live “in the moment.” Their sleep is less affected by disruptions than that of humans. They also have a more adaptable, efficient way of resting that helps them recharge quickly.
In summary, we should be more like dogs?
For sleep… maybe we should be. My hounds don’t drink coffee or sit at a computer. They play hard and nap often. That sounds healthy, doesn’t it? The primary reason for their shorter lifespans is a natural consequence of their biology — it has nothing to do with sleep.
For baths… not so much. Hugo had his 2nd bath yesterday and he’s been here just over 2 months.
He’s the first dog I’ve had in my life that isn’t afraid of a hair dryer. He loves it! What he doesn’t love is the vacuum. 🙂
Now you know: After George Harrison’s death from lung cancer, his widow sued a doctor at the hospital where he received radiation therapy for allegedly forcing Harrison to listen to his son play guitar and autograph the guitar while lacking his mental faculties.
