new found respect for sharing

Aug 18, 2025

My Nanny used to can all kinds of stuff… from pickles to relish, and from green beans to peppers. She even made ketchup and other goodies from the garden too numerous to mention. Her garden was right beside the garage and it wasn’t huge. I remember the first row toward the driveway was rhubarb plants because pap-pa liked rhubarb pie.

Mr. Pesky has a HUGE garden and keeps all of us in tomatoes till we think we’re going to explode if we eat just one more of them. I only remember Mom canning one thing — some kind of nasty fish I wouldn’t have eaten if starving. But she does prepare a lot of dishes from the harvests. One thing Mr. Pesky doesn’t plant is sweet corn.

Corn is 0 points on Weight Watchers.

Because you can eat all you want without points — and because I LOVE fresh corn — I had those pesky neighbors pick up some for me when they went to my cousin’s farm (Wischmeyer’s have the best corn on the planet).

I shucked the ears and cleaned up my mess of sticky silk…

Then I boiled the delicious vegetable to perfection…

And finally, I put what I couldn’t eat into freezer bags for later.

That’s how I acquired a newfound BIG respect for all the women who bring fresh homegrown corn to gatherings.

After all that work, I doubt I’ll share my corn with anyone. Get back, Perry, Ben… anyone thinking they’re going to enjoy my hard work. And it IS hard work, you guys. Those McKain women who would bring corn to family gatherings — they sure did love us. And when NaLona shares her corn? Same thing applies.

Now you know: A Wells Fargo employee named Denise Ann Prudhomme was found dead at her desk 4 days after she had last scanned her badge to get into work. She was discovered when another employee walking by noticed that she was “slumped over” in her chair.
