one dog’s scary treadmill misadventure

Aug 22, 2025

The TV above the treadmill was loud enough to hear over the hum and sounds of my feet hitting the belt. I always pick a series to watch when I’m walking to hold my attention so I’m not thinking about the monotonous chore. Hugo has a penchant for mischief and typically guards me as I walk. Within the past couple days, he found that if he growls through the fan, it sounds funny. It’s like a noisy zoo in there.

When Merida walked in to check out the strange animal noise, she wandered too close to the back of the treadmill that was running at a pretty good clip. The relentless motion flipped her feet out from under her. Her legs churned comically as she was launched backward, eyes wide with bewilderment.

I almost fell… and yelled, “MERIDA!!”

I yelled mostly because it scared me. Trying to make sense of her unexpected flight, the black hound gave me a wary side-eye as if I had personally betrayed her. She thought I did it!

I called her over and checked that she wasn’t injured and she wildly wiggled like she always does. She was just fine and the misadventure was already forgotten.

Funny how quickly dogs forgive any perceived anger or harm. We don’t deserve them.❤️

Now you know: Abraham Lincoln was a licensed bartender before becoming president. In 1833, he co-owned a tavern in New Salem, Illinois called “Berry and Lincoln”. They obtained a liquor license to sell various alcoholic beverages, including whiskey, brandy, and gin.
