predicting the weather: ouija board or meteorologist?

Jul 22, 2026

The Ouija board might be fun for spooky vibes, but it’s about as useful for weather predictions as asking your dogs. 🐶

So what about meteorologist’s forecasts?

Statistics show that modern forecasts are impressively reliable:

  • 5-day forecasts are accurate 90% of the time.
  • 7-day forecasts hit around 80% accuracy.

A HUGE miss locally this week.

When i went to bed on Monday night/Tuesday morning at 12:30 AM, the weather.com forecast was for rain beginning at 8:00 AM and lasting until around 10:00 PM on Tuesday evening. The high temperature wasn’t to even reach 80°.

By 11:00 AM, it was 83° under sunny skies and not one drop of rain had fallen.

wrong forecast

My favorite local meteorologist, Marc Weinberg, (who often makes me crazy when he blathers on and on) didn’t stick to weather.com’s timeline and his predictions were more accurate.

We had a brief storm that dumped a couple inches before the sun came back out.

This latest forecast miss is proof that you should not only BUY locally, but should trust local forecasts delivered by an expert that is studying your specific area as opposed to generalities. 🙂

Now you know: In 1967, an American high school teacher created a fake authoritarian movement called “The Third Wave” to show his students how ordinary Germans could have supported the rise of Nazism. Within days, students had became so radicalised that he decided to end the experiment.
