take me back to 1968 for ham salad

take me back to 1968 for ham salad

Facebook sucks… until it doesn’t. Someone shared an ad placed in the Giveaway in 1968 from my parent’s grocery store. Free delivery with a $5 order.

McKain's Market ad from 1968

So what could you get with that 5 bucks?

  • 3 doz eggs
  • 3 pounds of bologna
  • 1 pound ham salad
  • 1 pound potato salad
  • head of lettuce
  • bottle of salad dressing
  • 20 pounds of potatoes
  • 6 pot pies
  • 2 pounds french fries

And… they’ll shop for you and deliver it to you all for that $5 dollar bill.

What I wouldn’t give for the best ham salad ever made — for .59 cents a pound!!

Now you know: Due to their long association with humans, dogs have evolved the ability to thrive on a starch-rich diet, which would be inadequate for other canid species.

a walk down my county road

a walk down my county road

When I lived in Seymour, I walked many evenings — sometimes with Katie and sometimes with one of my hounds. It was a great neighborhood and many others chose to walk there too. It was nothing to meet several people riding bikes and walking with strollers. My path took me around by the high school, so that simply wasn’t possible on football nights.

The view here sure is different!

walking down my county road

The neighbors down the road walk some as a family, but other than them I’ve not seen anyone else walking for their health on this road besides Mr. Pesky and me. (I clarify “walking for health benefits” because on rare occasions I’ve seen a person or two walking to town.)

Never once in Seymour did I even SEE a garden… much less a gardener.

resident gardener

I understand if you’re more peopley than I am and enjoy living in the city. I’ll admit it’s more convenient for eating out and getting groceries. I’ll take those losses and still consider rural living a win.

I’m not the only one that loves this county road. ๐Ÿ™‚

what do you cook that your grandmother made?

what do you cook that your grandmother made?

Nanny was a great cook back in her day although there was never a fancy main dish on her table. She served potatoes (usually fried) for a side with every single meal because that’s what my Pap-pa wanted.

She was the queen of cobblers and pies — the crust was always homemade. I don’t remember her baking cakes, but she made a mean persimmon pudding and a tasty cheesecake.

Nanny & Ben in 1997

One of the main dishes she prepared often was salmon patties.

For dinner yesterday, I thought of her as I made them just the way that she always did. I’ve never seen anyone else make 3-sided patties… except for Mom, and of course, she does that because Nanny always did.

salmon patties

Ben’s old enough to remember Nanny making salmon patties for him — and if I did a bun-sized patty he’d probably look at me like I’d lost my mind.

For the record, I didn’t eat even one bite of these things. Not just because of the diet challenge, but primarily because when I’m the one that makes them (and smells them), I pass on putting them in my mouth.

Now you know: In 1995, 7 children died in a bus crash in Fox River Illinois when a substitute driver stopped with the back part of the bus still on train tracks. The children were screaming for her to move ahead but she became confused and a train hit the bus a 60mph.

An adventure of a lifetime with an old friend

An adventure of a lifetime with an old friend

All alone, Katie leaves today at noon for a trip to Europe. She won’t be alone once she reaches London though — her friend from Denmark, Kim, is meeting her there.

Katie is so excited, and I’m excited for her. We roasted hot dogs and marshmallows for s’mores for her grand send off.

night by the fire

Kim was a Crothersville High School exchange student in 2012.

Kim stayed with Katie and family for a year more than a decade ago. She and Katie became great friends and remain so still today. They cooked up a dream trip that’s becoming a reality starting today. Neither have been to London or Paris — and Katie’s never been to Denmark — although they did both go to the C’ville prom. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Katie and Kim

I can’t wait to hear the stories (many will begin with Katie’s flight, I’m sure) and see all the photos that will make it to my phone in the next couple weeks.

Now you know: Airplane emergency exit doors are impossible to open mid flight. It would take 24,000 pounds of force to open the door because of the air pressure.

the rain that never happened

the rain that never happened

Under an air quality alert because of high temps and humidity the night before last, Mr. Pesky and I decided not to take our daily walk. We didn’t want to join the dude on the back deck due to a heart attack.

Mr. Pesky

Last night, we started our nightly routine a bit earlier surrounded by dark skies and a bit of wind. We didn’t want to miss 2 nights in a row. We both felt a drop or two of rain about 1/2 way through our normal trek and called it done. We both headed to our respective homes to await the downpour.

Then, it never did actually rain.

We didn’t get wet… but neither did anything else. ๐Ÿ™„

I will admit, I HATE walking outside. I’d 10 times rather put in my steps on the treadmill even when the scenery doesn’t begin to compare.

barndo at night

I’m sure the reason I’m not a fan has something to do with the variety in terrain. Walking on uneven surfaces, such as inclines on pavement, engages different muscle groups, improving balance and coordination. Yes, those are distinct plusses I could definitely benefit from. Still, I’d rather be rickety and get my steps in and over with on the treadmill.

Which is better for you?
