are we there yet? More snow.

are we there yet? More snow.

I got out of bed late this morning and the dogs were more than ready to take a trip (or 10) outside. Dharma has resorted to simply not getting off the deck since she had a hard time getting up the one step yesterday evening. She’s proof it’s still doing something out there…

Dharma says it's still snowing

I don’t want to stay home another day,” he said.

I saw my friend, Alisa, made it to work in Seymour via a Facebook video she shared of the roads. Ben was determined to get to work, primarily because he didn’t want to sit in the house all day. He warmed his car up and opened the garage door. All the backing up and pulling forward and his car wasn’t even getting out of the garage.

stuck in the garage

Honda CRV to the rescue!

The old Honda backed right out and headed down the road no problem. Ben was rescued from home boredom and evidently snowmaggedon isn’t as bad as it could’ve been. I’m seeing reports of a lot of slide-offs, and many factories and businesses are closed locally — but Ben said the roads were “about usual for snow.

He said they’re staying open with a skeleton crew… only 4 managers and 3 associates to run the entire Scottsburg Walmart supercenter. Not sure who he’s going to boss around today, but it still beats staying home. 😉

lots of snow

Now you know: Judy Garland was very close with the dog who played Toto, even letting the pup stay at her house while healing from an on-set accident. She attempted to purchase Toto but the owner wouldn’t sell.

snowmageddon day #1: evening update

snowmageddon day #1: evening update

Not sure how much snow is on the ground but it’s still coming down. Before dark, it was still snowing with no freezing rain or sleet here on the outskirts of the ville.

At close to 7:30 PM currently, the flakes are huge. Scottsburg Walmart is closing at 8:00 PM — not sure that’s EVER happened — and Jackson County is in a “red” travel zone.

still snowing

UPDATE 8:35 PM: Sleet has started. Not only can we hear it on the metal roof here at the barndo, but right in front of the door on the deck — where the dogs go out — it’s made a thick layer of hard crusty stuff on top of the snow. Still hoping freezing rain bypasses us and the power hangs in there.

More tomorrow… here’s hoping the power stays on wherever you are (and here too!).

snowmageddon update: day #1 @1:00 PM ET

snowmageddon update: day #1 @1:00 PM ET

The snow hasn’t stopped falling and we’ve already gotten over an inch… close to 3″ maybe? We have 3 here at the barndo on “team snow” — Hugo, Dharma and Me. And we have 3 on “team no” — Perry, Ben and Merida.

Birds gotta’ eat!

The birds here evidently knew about the forecast because they hit the feeder extra hard yesterday. Perry filled the one on the deck with the help of Merida and Hugo.

The temp right now isn’t awful. It’s currently a relatively comfortable 25°. If this keeps up until tomorrow morning, we may all be “team no”.

perry is team no snow

snowmageddon arrives right on time

snowmageddon arrives right on time

And we’re off! So far, it’s not horribly cold outside, there’s no wind whipping around, and the snow is beginning to softly fall. It’s BEAUTIFUL!

snow has started to fall

I’ve already been outside with the doggos because Dharma has to have an escort off the porch. Yup! In my shortie pajamas, I brave every element just so she can pee outside.

puppies in the snow

Hugo’s first “real” snow…

Cold temps make all 3 dogs frisky. It moves Dharma to almost normal activity mode and the other 2 into hyper-holy shit activity levels. If we lose power, Merida’s shock collar will be one of the priority charges made from the generator.

The snow is steadily falling and our landscape will be changing rapidly if forecasters are right. Stay tuned for updates… especially if you’re out of range of snowmaggedon January, 2025.

Now you know: Beginning Wednesday January 25, 1978, Indiana was paralyzed by a snow storm that came to be known as the Blizzard of ’78, the worst blizzard on record for the Hoosier state.

2025 is already trying to teach us a lesson

2025 is already trying to teach us a lesson

Here we are… the eve of a New Year. I thought I was more than ready to usher in 2025 until I found out it’s already got it in for most of us here in the US. 🙁

Coldest temps since 1994??

In case you don’t remember what those temps were in Indiana, let me refresh your memory:
— Indiana’s state record low was -36° in New Whiteland
— Indianapolis hit -27° on January 19, 1994

Without spending a ton of time digging through really old photos, I don’t have one to share from January 1994. What I do have is one from January of this year when the glass storm door was frozen over:

And one from January 10 years ago…

Predictions can be wrong! *crosses fingers*

Meteorologists are predicting bitter cold coming soon to Indiana — with temps “much below” normal for January. One (that I noticed), said it could break 1994’s record. I love me some snow, but I’m not a fan of cold wind or temps below 25° or so. 2025 is coming… and so is winter weather here at the barndo.

Now you know: When Jimmy Hendrix’s mom died he was 16. His dad did not allow him and his brother to go to the funeral. Instead, he gave them shots of whiskey and told them that was how men should deal with loss.
