people don’t want to hear your opinion

people don’t want to hear your opinion

My favorite brother sent me a meme that contained a statement as true as any I’ve ever read. It said:

“People don’t want to hear your opinion. They want to hear THEIR opinion come out of YOUR mouth.”

something we can ALL agree on

It’s a fact — not just an opinion — that you must pay attention to pricing. If you don’t, you’ll get taken advantage of in the worst ways possible.

Here’s just one example… I use Truvia sweetener in my coffee and always buy in bulk and infrequently. The image below is comprised of 2 honest to goodness screenshots of the exact same product being sold at the exact same time by 2 different companies. Both offer free shipping.

You guessed it! The one on the left is Amazon. The one on the right is Sam’s Club. A couple bucks here and there is one thing, but the 100+ people that fell for the Amazon pricing within the last month are so dumb I don’t care what their reviews claim. 🙄

wintertime dog problems: not much you can do about it

The cold days combined with snowfall has my three hounds wanting out millions of times per day. Of course, they don’t want to stay out long.

Dharma wants in.

My floors are a mess with doggie footprints. Their skin is itchy so there’s that to contend with too. The out/in cycle is on constant repeat just like the movie, “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray. And speaking of groundhogs… Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow on Monday, Feb. 2, this year which means, according to the legend, six more weeks of winter are on the way.

I’m complaining now — just think what it will be like when all this stuff melts.

Now you know: Groundhog Day was first marked in the U.S. with a prediction by Punxsutawney Phil in 1886. He moved to Gobbler’s Knob in 1887.

Mr. Pesky complains about starlings hitting his feeder. I brag that I never see any of those — and no sparrows either. Come to find out, I was wrong about the sparrows…

Eastern Towhee on feeder

Drink your tea!

The bird in the photo above — per Grok — is a Eastern Towhees, or new world sparrow. He’s male, based on the striking black head, throat, back, and upper-parts contrasting with bright rufous (rusty orange-brown) sides/flanks and a clean white belly. He has a long, dark tail (with white corners often visible in flight or certain angles) and a sturdy, seed-cracking bill typical of sparrows.

They make a loud “drink-your-tea!” or “tow-hee!” call sound.

While I still like the redbirds and woodpeckers best, those towhees sure are cute too. 🙂

Now that we’ve had even more snow piled on top of what was already there, it’s important to feed the critters who may not have an easy time. The ground is frozen solid — and has been for quite some time now.

With all the photos I’ve been sharing lately, you’d think we live in Niseko, Japan (the snowiest place on the planet) — or at least someplace like Alaska. But no! All my photos are from good ole’ southern Indiana.

Now you know: “Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe” is a 1980 documentary film in which the filmmaker fulfills a bet he made to eat a shoe if a colleague completed a film. He boiled the shoe in garlic and stock and ate it at the film premiere.

how many more sleeps until it warms up in southern Indiana?

When Ben was a youngster, he always wanted to know “how many sleeps” until he would get (or get to do) whatever it was that he deemed important at the time. After more snowfall yesterday — adding to what snow was dumped earlier that’s still hanging around — I need to know how many more sleeps until we have ‘normal’ winter.

I love snow, but these temps are brutal.

The snowfall yesterday wasn’t much, but it did coat the tree branches and left a sprinkling of the white stuff on top of what was already there. The frigid temperatures are the worst part though. It was -9° when I got up this morning, and will only reach the teens with windchill numbers too ugly to repeat.

Playing outside makes you sleepy.

Hugo LOVES the snow and he’s the instigator on going in and out every 5 minutes. He comes in crazy wild and zoomies all through the house. He then runs between the legs of whomever is standing and wants warm hands to cover his cold ears. Once that process is complete, he gets cozy on the couch and prepares to nap — it’s a cycle on repeat from daylight until around midnight.

So back to the question of day: How many sleeps until it warms up here?

If weather.com is correct, we’ll be barely above freezing in just a couple days… with rain. ARG!

Now you know: Over a 5-month period in 2020, a nurse in Yale’s fertility center stole the fentanyl in 175 vials that were meant for women who had a procedure to have their eggs retrieved. The nurse replaced the pain medication with saline solution, leaving the women in excruciating pain during the procedure.

how to make use of the county’s ditch

how to make use of the county’s ditch

Y’all remember when I posted about how my county showed up and dug a ditch in front of the barndo even when I asked them not to? How they said because there was a 2nd driveway, the road would flood without it? For the record, it’s NEVER had water in it — it’s just something that requires weed eating maintenance.

But I have a brilliant idea!

We have a wood boiler that heats the entire barndo via a radiant heat hydronic floor system. Soooo… before getting gravel again here, I’m thinking I should have the same types of pipes installed from the barndo to the road so my driveway never gets snowy again. Of course, the melting snow must have someplace to run off to so it doesn’t refreeze in some undesirable spot — and I have a ditch that would work perfectly for that!

I figure it would only take a few years of paying someone to clean the drive of snow to finance the improvement, and it would mean that Jackson County didn’t waste taxpayer money for no good reason.

Frigid temps are going to hang around for awhile in southern Indiana.

Neg… neg… negative temps are what we have to look forward to when crawling out of bed in the mornings. Those negative temps are back by the time we crawl back in bed at night.

The cold air doesn’t keep the bird patrons from visiting the seed cafe though. They just puff out a little more and don’t let it deter them.

my photos aren’t of white stuff behind screens

My favorite brother — and Perry’s Mom too — both sent photos of their snowfall totals. All I could tell is that there MIGHT be snow behind the fabulous photos of screens inside their windows. I have shared a few snaps from the outside security cameras like the one below, but no photos of window screens on whatifitdid.com!

We all went outside yesterday, and yes, it was COLD.

Hugo LOVES the snow. He loves it so much, in fact, that he had a spit icicle frozen to the side of his face.

The boiler is working perfectly and keeping it toasty inside.

It was such a relief when we got the boiler dialed in just in time for the snow and cold spell. I was worried about it… not gonna’ lie. Perry cleaned off the deck and sidewalk to the yard, and we have a dude coming to clear our driveway today. OH! Perry says “hi.”

Perry says hi

How much total snow did we get?

I don’t know for sure, but it was close to a foot in the spots we measured. With the wind, many areas had a drift and others were lower to make a drift. One thing for certain… it was enough. 🙂

how much snow?

Now you know: The “hushed” feeling after a snowfall is due to snow being a great sound absorber. Fresh, fluffy snow absorbs roughly 60% of sound on average, making it comparable to the commercial foams and fibers used inside cars and buildings.
