a 2014 flashback

Facebook memories remind you of your past social media shares.

Shelley, we care about you and the memories you share here. We thought you’d like to look back on this post from 8 years ago.

Facebook Memories

2014 neighbor

I’m grateful to be looking back and not forward!

No neighbors close enough here to blast a light bright enough to illuminate my entire kitchen and living room. No privacy fence needed here either. That, my friends, is peace in my book.

This place — even with its faults (and there are many!) — is exactly what I needed. Not gonna lie… I wouldn’t mind if it was a stick-built brick home with hardwood floors and crown molding. But the fact that it isn’t doesn’t bother me one bit. Even the cricket sitting beside my desk on the concrete floor doesn’t phase me. If it’s a cricket VS a face melting light… I’ll take the cricket every single time.

From a dog’s viewpoint:

Now that the corn is gone, the doggos think there’s a whole new world to explore. I knew they would like it here better than their small fence-blocked yard in Seymour, but had no idea how much it would transform them.

corn is gone

Sure wish Libby was still around — she would patrol this place to the point that even Ralph (the local racoon) wouldn’t dare to come near. 🙂

TIL (Today I Learned): 250 miles north of San Francisco is California’s “Lost Coast.” There is almost 100 miles of mountainous, remote and nearly inaccessible coastline owned by the Federal Government.

because moving sucks

because moving sucks

Just me… absent for a long time and still struggling with a move that may last forever.

After THREE surveys, everyone finally agreed to a property line. That’s done. Still no clue when my move in date will be, but I am 100% positive I have to turn over the keys here on the 9th of September. Perry took a week off to help move but without anyplace to go, even that sort of sucks.

moving day again

DRUM ROLL PLEASE… a dumpster was delivered. It will be picked up tomorrow so today is the day for last minute trashy decisions.

4 more sleeps

When Ben was little and excitedly counting down days he would always ask, “how many more sleeps?” I have 4. FOUR! Four more sleeps until I have no clue how I’ll handle 2 dogs in a strange sleeping area.

TIL (Today I Learned): The fancy antique bottle which Jeannie called home was actually a decorative Jim Beam liquor decanter, which originally contained “Beam’s Choice” Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Ben for Mayor

Ben for Mayor

My son informed me he is going to run for Mayor. It’s his opinion that there are two things in Seymour that should be priority that aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

Drainage and trains.

The train situation is being worked on, I guess, but not sure how much longer that’s going to take. Currently, it’s a huge delay and concern.

US 50 floods — and with all the recent construction, it’s still only two lanes. Village Green is under water right now. Seriously underwater. Cars in driveways with water above the frame. Water is over the road at the Presbyterian Church, but not bad at all around the hospital. No standing water there as evidenced by the standard ‘out the window while at the doctor with Mom‘ photo I always take:

The outside photo is always taken in conjunction with our standard selfie when Mom goes to her doctor’s office. Neither of us appear to be having the best day ever. The rain did a number on my hair and we both look like we’ve been punched in one eye… mine is the left, and hers is the right:

The good news is that she’s healthy and I feel better than I look. 🙂 Carl and Mozzie are doing just fine too…

Mom Carl and Mozzie

One thing I found interesting when speaking with her doctor is his opinion on COVID. He thinks we’re currently in a lull of sorts, but numbers will rise again. He said there will be no more boosters, but we’ll move toward a yearly injection. I hope he’s wrong about the increased numbers of those getting ill — especially seriously ill — but so far believe he could very well be correct.

TIL (Today I Learned): Ethiopia has a unique calendar which is 7-8 years behind the rest of the world. The current year in Ethiopia is 2014.

don’t sit on the outside and avoid the train

don’t sit on the outside and avoid the train

The other day I posted a couple family photos taken outside at Cracker Barrel. In both, I was the only one wearing sunglasses. The reason is because I took those photos with my iPhone using my Apple watch to “click” and the sun was such that I could see better with them on. I positioned the phone at the level we were seated, and all those photos were decent considering the subjects… but I was wearing sunglasses.

So when a passer-by offered to take a photo, I took my glasses off — but because she was standing up and Mom and I were seated on the outside of the group — our heads were distorted. I looked like an alien and Mom had a bulge on her head that wouldn’t have been worse if she’d just wrested a grizzly.

distorted heads

It’s a common problem. You’ve probably had it happen too, right? A couple clicks within Adobe Lightroom under the “geometry” tab and voila!

Family photo geometry corrected

Today’s Tip: If you don’t have Lightroom, don’t sit on the outside of a group photo being taken with a phone. Thank me later. 🙂

And one more tip…

Don’t think if you plan to go from one side of Seymour to the other you can accurately predict how long it will take. My 3.9 mile drive home from the restaurant that evening took about 50-minutes. We have trains here. LONG and SLOW ones that block US 50 forever. My brother was almost to Indy before I pulled in my driveway.

Seymour has long and slow trains

TIL (Today I Learned): Dr. John Kellogg who ran the Battle Creek Sanitarium starting in 1876 believed that most ailments resulted from unclean bowels full of toxins from undigested food. To that end, he administered enemas with a device capable of running fifteen gallons of water through a patient’s bowel in seconds. **Pretty sure my Mom will appreciate this one.**

Today on Facebook I read a post asking for prayers. The post was from a son needing prayers for four family members. He said his Dad would likely not pull through. The other family members weren’t doing great either and a couple were being moved to ICU with a variety of issues.

My 2019 brain thought it was a car accident most likely. My 2020 brain realized the family all has COVID-19. 🙁

While so many are gaining weight during the pandemic, Dharma has been on a diet. She has her girlish figure back, you guys! Wish I could say the same for myself.

Dharma post pandemic diet

She needed this nap after an exciting ‘house guarding‘ experience that started with a short siren whoop. I could hear Christmas music playing loudly outside before I got to the door to see it was a firetruck decked out with flashing Christmas lights.

There were several cars following behind — one with a kid that shouted at me… so I shouted back. 🙂

How severe the pandemic is in the places where people I care about are located…
Daily NEW COVID-19 cases (7 day moving average):
Indiana-90.2 (up); Jackson Co – 108.2 (tad down) — 7.77% infected (up); Florida 47.9 (up); Nevada – 79.3 (down)

TIL (today I learned): The Tin Man in “The Wizard of Oz” movie cried chocolate syrup. Actual machine oil didn’t show up well in film.
