my photos aren’t of white stuff behind screens

My favorite brother — and Perry’s Mom too — both sent photos of their snowfall totals. All I could tell is that there MIGHT be snow behind the fabulous photos of screens inside their windows. I have shared a few snaps from the outside security cameras like the one below, but no photos of window screens on whatifitdid.com!

We all went outside yesterday, and yes, it was COLD.

Hugo LOVES the snow. He loves it so much, in fact, that he had a spit icicle frozen to the side of his face.

The boiler is working perfectly and keeping it toasty inside.

It was such a relief when we got the boiler dialed in just in time for the snow and cold spell. I was worried about it… not gonna’ lie. Perry cleaned off the deck and sidewalk to the yard, and we have a dude coming to clear our driveway today. OH! Perry says “hi.”

Perry says hi

How much total snow did we get?

I don’t know for sure, but it was close to a foot in the spots we measured. With the wind, many areas had a drift and others were lower to make a drift. One thing for certain… it was enough. 🙂

how much snow?

Now you know: The “hushed” feeling after a snowfall is due to snow being a great sound absorber. Fresh, fluffy snow absorbs roughly 60% of sound on average, making it comparable to the commercial foams and fibers used inside cars and buildings.

the amount of snow we’ve had so far is indeed impressive

We’ve had so much snow so far — and it’s still snowing — that I let Dharma poop on the deck instead of walking her off into the yard. In circumstances like these, she didn’t mind and I didn’t either. 🙂

it's still snowing!

Shelley’s Seed Cafe may need to expand in size.

There weren’t many patrons to the Seed Cafe yesterday evening, but this morning it’s crazy busy! While there’s plenty of seeds stored for restocking, the employee that replenishes what’s already been devoured isn’t looking forward to working today. 😉

More to come… stay warm and stay safe!

welp… here we go again…

welp… here we go again…

It’s snowing as I write this in the wee hours of the morning — before sleep — so if the snow is impressive tomorrow, I’ll likely post again. Right now, it’s softly falling and we’ve had some accumulation, but what’s most noticeable is that it’s COLD! Frigid even.

I’m happy I don’t live in Minnesota…

I understand protesting for something you feel strongly about. I do! But when self-proclaimed members of Antifa are ordering their followers to “get your f*cking guns” — and saying peaceful protesting is over? That would be my queue to go home and stay safe.

What the Internet was doing while I was waiting for snow:

Dharma wants to remind you — if you’re in the path of this latest snow dump — you should always wear a warm coat and don’t stay outside too long.

fire in the hole… and water, too!

fire in the hole… and water, too!

EnviroHeat did the boiler install here and they’re the only company that can purchase parts for it or is certified to work on it that’s located in our area.

The first time the boiler overheated, they came that afternoon. When the same thing happened again, they ghosted me. It was 4 days before I got a response from my voice messages… and it was by text. Two days in a row they promised to show up and didn’t. So Perry and I watched YouTube videos and consulted ChatGPT and now…

There’s fire in the hole!

Dude SAID he checked the water level, but he couldn’t have because the sight thing has been broken since November.

wood boiler challenges

We filled it with water and bled the lines. Estimating water flow time and the size of the hose, a conservative estimate is that we added around 170 gallons. It only holds 393 gallons, so it’s no surprise that was a big problem. With the snowmageddon that is to hit this weekend, it’s sort of a big deal to have heat. It worked fine… then just before midnight, it got too hot again. ARG!

That’s when Perry noticed the new rope EnviroHeat put on the door wasn’t even in place. Of course, fire getting too much air will cause it to get too hot.

Thanks for NOTHING EnviroHeat! 🤬

Hopefully, we’re now set for what’s coming our way…

snowfall predictions

We’re as ready as we’re going to get here at the barndo.

Perry’s on vacation before starting his new job late next week; we have full gas cans for the generator in case we need it; and I made a grocery run yesterday for us and the Pesky Neighbors. Ben will be staying in a hotel for 2 nights courtesy of his employer, and Katie works at Dollywood and is staying at the resort over the weekend. Tennessee’s governor declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, as did North Carolina.

Of course, all this means I’ll be sharing snow photos over the weekend, and in the meantime, check out last night’s view:

My hope…

My hope is that we get all snow and no ice, and that we all stay warm. I also hope that you have milk, eggs, and bread — along with toilet paper and coffee — and all pets are inside for the duration of the bad weather.

Now you know: In the 1950s, full length commercials were banned from US television, but were brought back in 1984 when the FCC rescinded the ban. By 1994, an estimated 91% of all TV stations were airing infomercials.

when it rains it pours & murphy’s law

when it rains it pours & murphy’s law

Relatively warm outside on Monday, I looked out and saw the wood boiler steaming and smoking out of the top release valve. Not good, you guys. I sent Perry a text telling him what it was doing and that the sound was loud. I attached the following photo…

boiler smoking

His reply, “Don’t go near it.” I let him know the temp gauge said it was 213°, and he sends a follow-up text, “Open the side panel and unplug it and flip the switch to off.” Not sure how he expected me to open the side panel while not going near it. 🫤

By this point, I figured I was about to blow sky high if I did it — and if I didn’t do it, I was about to blow sky high. I got it done, called for a repair service visit and watched as it steamed/smoked the rest of the day.

Mr. Service dude showed up yesterday.

It didn’t take the guy long to determine that the bearings were going out of the pump and it had overheated because the pump had shut off. Ordering a new one wouldn’t allow for an immediate fix. And by this time, the weather was no longer warm. Matter of fact, it was windy as all Hell and snowing.

snowing and colder with wind

Even the birds were hanging on the swinging feeder — fighting the wind as their feathers ruffled — trying to get that last meal in before the seeds were unavailable or frozen.

We’re still warm so far…

We currently have heat from mini-splits — heat pumps — that aren’t good when the temp drops low. I have an iHeater. So far we’re warm. The “feel like” temperature last night was 9°. Mom looks worse than she did before, and she has another appointment today. And now I have a heating problem and Dharma is the only family member that doesn’t mind frigid weather.

This is proof that when it rains it pours, and Murphy’s law stating, “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong,” is true.

On the upside… we’re warm enough and Mom — although she looks worse — is healing. We’re all healthy and have plenty of food to eat. Life is still good. 🩷
