gearing up for the winter olympics — snow is here

It makes me happy to see snow falling — I love how it blankets the earth. If it’s winter, then gimme some of that clean, white and crisp stuff.

snowing on the outskirts of the ville

I love it even more now!

I’m probably more of a snow fan because I no longer have to get out and drive in it. I do worry when my family and friends have to get to work — like Ben and Perry.

Speaking of poor Perry, he worked 10 hours starting at 6:00 AM yesterday morning. His 3rd shift person called in because the roads were too bad (she lives 10 miles away) so he had to cover that. AND, he’s today’s opener. I can’t imagine working 30 hours in 2 days. 🙁

The girls love the snow, but they don’t want to stay out there.

You’d never know by their pitiful faces that they were only outside like 10 minutes tops.

It’s supposed to be sunny later today, the snow having ended with about 3 inches on the ground here.

Now you know: On the set of Jaws, Spielberg invited George Lucas to see the mechanical shark still in development. Lucas playfully stuck his head in its mouth and Spielberg clamped it shut, leaving Lucas stuck. They snuck out of the workshop thinking they broke the contraption after eventually freeing him.

The worst of the cold temps are behind us (for now) in the Ville. Snow is predicted and I’ve got my fingers crossed that we’ll get some. Even though a foot would make me happy, it’s probably not going to amount to anything — and next week, we’ll be in the mid-50’s they say.

UPDATE: In the few hours since I originally published this post, the weather forecast changed. I guess we’re not done with the bitter cold after all and the chance of snow has increased:

It was REALLY frosty out yesterday morning.

The storm door was covered to the point I couldn’t see out of it. Or in…

Even though it was ‘freeze your nose off’ cold, the sun coming up was still beautiful.

The worst of the frigid weather is over! Yay!

By late afternoon, we were back in the 20’s and that’s not so awful. I made a blueberry dessert (recipe here) that I hand-delivered to those pesky neighbors in a pair of shorts, fur lined boots, and a heavy coat. My sister, Mozzie, is always excited to see me and doesn’t care that I look crazy traipsing around in shorts in January. 😉

Mozzie watches for me to get to her house.

Two questions for you to ponder:

  1. Even if you prefer summer and warmer temps, when it’s winter does snow make you happy?
  2. If you have a sibling, do you get excited when they visit you? Or do you not care so much if you see them or not?

i just finished a 10 hour book and now my subconscious is british

You know how you talk to yourself in your head? It’s ok, everybody does it! The act of talking to your own mind goes by many names. Some call it internal dialog or internal monologue, while others refer to it as self-talk. It’s basically how you reflect, deliberate or ponder just about everything.

I wonder if dogs do it too only in barks and grunts.

Merida practicing self-talk

Maybe I should READ books instead of listening to them.

I’ve often said that I prefer to listen to books rather than sitting down to read them. That way, I have something to occupy my mind when I’m cleaning house or cooking a meal.

I consumed my latest audio book over a shorter time period because the weather outside is atrocious. (It was ZERO degrees when I woke up this morning.) The entire book was narrated by a woman with a British accent, so her dialect was pumped into my subconscious for multiple hours.

Imagine my surprise when my self-talk voice was me sounding all British! Yup — it’s true. Stuck at home during this cold weather snap might be driving me a bit mad. 🤪

After thinking I needed to build an ark over the last couple days, that thought has been replaced since liquid has turned solid outside… crunchy and frozen over. The current Indiana weather is ruff on a dog mom (me!). Dharma’s fear of just about everything under her feet with the exception of carpet, (it’s getting even worse as she ages with bad hips), means escorting her to the yard.

Yes, even when I’m still in pajamas…

outside in the rain captured by a wyze cam

Wind howling at 18º when I got up this morning (feels like 6º in case you want to feel sorry for us Hoosiers), all I can think about is heat — hoping I keep it, and wishing every living creature that needs it has it.

When considering heating options for new builds, you might find the following info important:

If you’re entertaining the idea of building a barndo or a home on a slab, you might be considering radiant floor heat with an outside boiler (gas or electric). It’s said to be cheaper but I’m not sure I agree when it’s a wood boiler and you don’t cut/split/haul your own. I started the winter season with $1000 bucks of wood delivered.

With the frigid weather incoming — high winds and temps forecasted between 5º and 13º for highs — I want to mention that outside boilers use electric. Its thermometer is powered by electricity and the temp measured determines when the damper opens and closes — also electric. And, it takes electricity to push the heated water through the floors.

So far with these crazy strong winds we haven’t lost power — and I’m happy it’s not ME adding wood to the boiler on days like this:

outside boiler from inside perspective on a rainy day

We currently have zero options insofar as backup heat should the electric go out. Just like anything else, there are pros and cons to radiant floor heating via an outside boiler.

PROS:

  • hot water for days
  • toasty warm floors
  • zero noise

CONS:

  • Can’t adjust temps for specific rooms
  • Can’t lower temp at night
  • Requires outside attention in inclement weather

I love the barndo’s radiant floor heat even with the cons; however, the older I get the more I realize we should also implement a back-up plan. I’m about 80% sure it’s going to be gas stoves… 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs.

Now you know: Of the 400-500 shark species, no organ capable of producing sound has been found.

dangerously cold arctic air is coming to the ville

dangerously cold arctic air is coming to the ville

It was windy and rainy for almost the entire day yesterday here in the outskirts of the Ville. It wasn’t just dainty rain either — at times, it was the hard, pouring kind. Dogs still need to go out and and that leads to wet dog stink. ARG!

Dharma after getting wet outside.
Merida on the top deck during a break from the rain.

Compared to what’s coming, rain at 50 degrees is not so bad.

High winds (up to 40mph gusts) combined with dog stink is bad, but we’re under a weather warning for Sunday to Friday. If that system materializes, it will be a whole lot worse.

Wind chill temps from -10 to -25 are forecasted! That’s below zero, y’all. I’m confident in the ability to stay warm here at the barndo, but I sure worry about people and pets when it’s so frigid.

My practice retirement time off will soon be only a memory. 😩

I’m supposed to start back to “real” work next Monday. I was dreading it, but since today was crazy busy and I’m not getting paid AND I survived, I guess I won’t yet throw in the towel. But I sure want to.

I’m happy for my friends that have retired — and I’m happy for those who love their jobs and don’t dream about it. I just wish I could join one or the other instead of staying here on this fence.
