I’ve discovered a few good things over the past few days that I would like to share…
Culver’s. Get a butter burger and crinkle fries. There’s one in Columbus (right beside Starbucks), and the food is great. It reminded me of what Steak n’ Shake used to be like. Yummy.
Taken. The movie is action-packed and Liam Neeson was awesome as the father of a kidnapped daughter with less than 4 days to be located. I wanted to personally slap the ex-wife. Watch this movie.
NetFlix. If you only watched the DVDs sent by mail per month, it might not be a tremendous value — you might just want to rent/purchase movies through iTunes — but coupled with the millions of movies that are available to watch online, it’s a real deal. Finally turned off ‘The Green Mile’ (which I had already seen 10 times at least) at 5:30 am this morning. Get NetFlix.
In the early to mid-80’s, I can remember going with friends to North Vernon to a bowling ally/bar to see this performer that I thought was so freaking awesome. The Pro Bowl was always packed, and live bands were the rage. Back in the day, DJs were around, but simply couldn’t draw a crowd or begin to compete with the atmosphere surrounding a live act.
The dude’s name was Henry Lee Summer. He was funny on stage, interacted with the audience, always jumped up and down with energy and enthusiasm, and even joined us on the dance floor on occasion. He ate Oreo cookies and wore goofy converse tennis shoes.
Henry Lee’s career was on the rise and soon he was the opening act for John (then Cougar) Mellencamp. I can remember my cousin, Jerilyn, and I going to Indy to a concert in 1986 — more because of Henry Lee than Mellencamp. “Wish I Had a Girl” was hot and he was on his game. I thought it was so cool that he still ‘came back home’ to do an occasional gig at the Pro Bowl — you didn’t see Mellencamp doing local shows (even though he used to play the “sock-hops” right here in the burg).
Jerilyn and I went to see him around 10 years ago at a bar in Bloomington and he still had it going on. It was a great time and the place was packed with college students. About a year ago, he was doing gigs at the Slippery Noodle in Indy. I remember going and being disappointed, but can’t remember who I went with. He’d evidently lost his edge enough at that point, the night simply wasn’t memorable. I heard he’s recently been playing the Big Dog Saloon of Indy.
When I saw that Henry Lee was recently arrested for possession of meth (among other things) — I was pretty disappointed. Click the link and check out what Henry Lee looks like now. Sad stuff. Wonder if it was his friends ripping off the anhydrous tanks this morning…
Here on the outskirts of the burg, trouble was a brewin’ in the wee hours this morning. This dead-end road had enough traffic it could’ve been mistaken for I65! There were police cars with lights flashing and officers on foot canvasing the fields. I guess hard times brings out criminals in full force — and I can attest that it brings out law enforcement in full force too. Police were swarming this sleepy rural area in an attempt to apprehend those who were trying to steal anhydrous ammonia from the tanks of the Farm Bureau Co-op that’s just across the field. I guess the officers thought they might even be hiding at my house/office because glinting flashlight beams lit everything up more than once.
Meth-heads are solely responsible for our lack of productivity today!
Of course this isn’t the first time that meth manufacturers have spent time beside those same tanks. I remember a few years back there was a couple caught with a make-shift lab right in their vehicle when arrested. I also remember that Buster got the towing assignment and the culprits arrived to pick up their truck the following day! It wasn’t surprising that they had the money to pay for the tow and the storage in cash. Wouldn’t you think some type of stricter punishment would apply?
I’m not a channel zapper. There are some commercials that I think are cute, some make me sing along, and others are so convincing, they make me want to go out and buy the product. But there are a ton of TV commercials that make me crazy.
As I’m sitting here on the couch reading Tweets and watching the tube, I can’t help but shake my head over the ADT commercial that’s been on twice in the past hour. You know the one…
Family leaves teenage girl at home. Young attractive girl decides to jog on a treadmill in a well lit room that consists of wall-to-wall windows when it’s pitch black outside — and of course puts her headphones on (probably listening to some rap music at full volume). The chick is like a fish in a lighted aquarium — on stage even. C’mon — the parents wouldn’t pull the curtains at night before leaving their vulnerable daughter home alone? ADT is not what this family needs! ADT doesn’t cure poor common sense.
The burg has had a couple of pretty interesting developments of late. From my point of view (about a mile outside of the town’s limits), I wonder if anyone listens — or if they do and simply don’t care.
First, the Town of Crothersville appointed Vurlin McIntosh (Mac) as Crothersville Chief of Police upon the retirement of Norman Ford. To be honest, I’ve never had an issue with Mac; therefore, really had no objection either way. But I did find it funny that I personally didn’t hear one positive comment insofar as Mac being the best candidate for the position. I guess that two of the Town Council members weren’t listening to what town residents were saying they wanted (or didn’t want) …or maybe they just didn’t care. Why do I say this? Because a 2-1 vote sealed Mac’s appointment as Chief of Police for the Town of Crothersville.
I heard buzz of petitions going around town to remove the newly appointed Chief, but the 2 council members that voted him in simply turned their heads to the noise — and pulled out another $2 bucks an hour (e) for him from the town’s wallet. Council President, Ardell Mitchell voted ‘no’ on both occasions — but Karen Mains, (who wasn’t even voted in as a council member) and Bill Nagle voted affirmative. I can understand to a point why Mains isn’t listening to voters — I mean, those speaking out didn’t want her in this decision-making position in the first place or they would’ve voted her in. But I wonder how much consideration Nagle gave to the opinions of those who trust(ed) him to vote on their behalf.
Next, Kendra Smith resigned her duties as an acting Crothersville School Board Member. Although she moved away from the burg quite some time ago, she used her Mother’s address to legally retain her board position. Then her Mother’s house sold. While I hated to see this family move away from the burg, I certainly didn’t see anything wrong with the fact that Kendra remained on the board throughout the interim — after all, she’s who the voters wanted in office. Another elected position open…
The applicant’s names for the Crothersville School Board Member opening were not provided to the public, (most of us know who they were anyway), but the board appointed Ralph Hillenburg. Interestingly enough — he is the dude that was voted OUT of office when Kendra was voted in. Voters didn’t want him then, but they’ve got him back now.
Do these 2 examples scream at you like they do me?
