I have this thing where I simply don’t remember details. My brain is so full of stuff that I have to remember, I think the trivial things have all been pushed out. Having said that, I don’t remember ever eating cereal when I was a kid. My brother liked Frosted Flakes (I think it was the whole Tony the Tiger thing), but if it was an obsession with him, I think I’d remember at least that much.
Growing up in a grocery store, McKain’s Market, my brother and I pretty much took home anything we wanted to eat, so it wasn’t that cereal was expensive and not purchased — I just didn’t care much about it. I remember thinking that’s what the kids ate for breakfast who didn’t have a parent that would actually fix “food”. Spending a great deal of time with my Nanny, I picked bacon and eggs or pancakes over a bowl of crispy crap with milk, since she always COOKED three meals a day for my Grandfather anyway.
Within the past couple of months, I’ve developed this obsession with cereal! Fruity Pebbles is my favorite hands-down. Isn’t it amazing that a cereal first sold in 1971 with Fred Flintstone marketing can still be a top seller when he and Barney have surely been dead a long time now? What’s even crazier is that the animated series stopped running on ABC in 1966 and we’re still buying it, as Fred’s still marketing it, over four decades later. But that’s not the best part! The first two series were sponsored by Winston cigarettes, and Fred and Wilma advertised them during the closing credits. Holy cow!
So where is Bedrock anyway? It’s gotta be warm as none of the characters are ever seen with clothing that covers their arms or legs. I think I want to go there! How about it all you cereal fans out there — do you agree that Fruity Pebbles rock, or do you have a different favorite?
