back to school

Aug 3, 2010

Today is the first day of school in the Ville. After driving a school bus for 100 years, I gave up the glamourous position to my good friend, Dennis Maxie a few years back. Of course there are days I miss the kids, and I’m not as connected to the community as I once was — still, I have to admit that I don’t miss the drama that revolves around any position within a school system, and I don’t miss getting up at the ass-crack of dawn (actually, it’s still dark in the winter for the morning route).

My last day to drive - 2007
(Taken my last driving day – last day of school 2007)

I still have some pretty good memories…

  • The day a mother allowed her son to bring a knife to school because someone pooped in his backpack. (Later found out that the kid pooped in his own backpack.)
  • The day the hamster escaped.
  • The day we started REALLY smelling the hamster.
  • The day a goat got on the bus at Nehrt’s hill. (This goat was like a dog — seriously!!)
  • The day I heard a student say, “Shelley, he’s flipping boogers at you!”
  • The day I found the crusty boogers on the back of my seat.
  • The day 2 students poured Elmer’s glue on the bus paint.
  • The day I got wrote up at inspection for paint issues and had to pay $640 for a touch-up.
  • The day a student explained that every night, his Dad got “full of da beer”
  • The day a student told me her Mom was hospitalized for “cocks are rotten” (later found out it was Oxycontin)

I could go on and on — but y’all get the point.
