a birthday do-over

Perry’s REAL birthday celebration was a bust. Thanks a lot, Red Lobster! But the do-over party? Amazing!

Kabuto’s fed us in style! Colette liked the fire (after the first big flare-up, she was enthralled), and ate more fried rice than anyone at the hibachi table. I personally passed on sushi because it’s nasty, but enjoyed an incredible meal seated right smack beside the prettiest little girl on the planet. Her Mommy is sorta’ cute too.

early warnings saved lives — but others were still lost

Seeing people in Wal-mart loading their cart with blankets and flashlights for survivors of the Henryville tornado makes my heart proud. Knowing that Tide is rolling in with portable washers/dryers? That ensures my laundry detergent will always remain the same. Seeing my Colts raise over $200k for southern Indiana storm victims in about an hour? That makes me love my team — and other fans — even more.

Perry (whose website is back up and should be your very next stop) posted today on The Missing Point reference the bullet dodged by residents of the Ville. So close to home, but still, I can’t begin to imagine how the folks living in the devastated small towns feel. Like most of you, I am touched by their suffering AND their determination.

My HMF (high maintenance friend for those playing along at home), and funeral director in both Crothersville and Henryville, Mark Adams, is still in the storm ravaged area. It goes without saying, he’s doing everything he can… and then some. (Check it out on WISH TV 8 VIDEO — ‘Henryville funeral home survives storm, offers comfort, more to town) As Internet service has yet to be restored in Henryville, Mark asked that I help by posting funeral service times of one lost on the Adams FH website that represents the Henryville community. The comment that followed the info posted was so touching…

In part, it said, “He died a true hero saving his beloved wife from the tornado coming through their house on March 2nd. I personally feel a great loss and humbled to have known and loved him.

I took the top photo last spring (don’t ask me why I was outside with my camera and not inside in the bathtub), and I remember being so scared! We lost 2 trees. Seems pretty minor now. But the vivid memory of my fear then — and hearing about what others are going through now — sure serves as a reminder of just how fragile life really is.

Yesterday, as I looked at the beautiful blue March sky… and last night, as I photographed it painted in red, my thoughts were with those who lost so much just a few miles south of the Ville. But especially, my thoughts were of Angel, the toddler found alone in a field — her mother, father, sister and brother already claimed by the 2012 tornado in Pekin, IN — and of her Grandfather who was left behind.

Heroes…

i think it’s time to search Google for instructions on building a storm shelter

Dear Insight (my favorite cable company) — you know the commercial you have that plays over and over… the one about how those poor people with Direct TV lost signal about an hour BEFORE the storms and got Insight because it’s reliable during weather? Well, it’s bad karma. Stop it already. And thanks, my Internet & TV were restored last night.

The second TV was working again, I clicked over to Weather.com to see what I’d missed reference the devastation in the wake of one of the worst March tornado outbreaks in years. Dr. Greg Forbes was telling me that these tornadoes are from early season — and because April, May and June are the ‘tornado months’ — we have a lot more to worry about.

I want a storm shelter. A real one — not my bathtub. Those pesky neighbors will be home soon, and I’m going to see if I can talk one of them into helping with some type of protective shelter. Big enough for dogs — and them too of course. Although the skies looked extremely angry on March 2, the Ville didn’t get much more than a sprinkle of rain…

One more thing. If you don’t have a weather radio. Get one. NOW. I didn’t know this until March 2nd… but if you live in a mobile home in the US, it’s a law you have one. The rest of us? It’s just common sense.

email – to send or not to send

Do you know that the typical office worker sends/receives 110 emails per day resulting in about 13 hours of emailing time per week? Add to that another hour per day the average worker spends searching for a lost email, and it’s easy to see why it’s a huge problem. Distractions are costly — but missing an important message that needs a prompt response? Even worse!

Someone once told me that I “have a tendency to be a bit wordy” — and, they were right! I do. While it might be best to keep email correspondence to 3 sentences, I know from experience that providing vague information only results in a bajillion follow-up emails… you know, the ask a question/give an answer dance that takes a ton more time.

So how do YOU tame the email beast at work? I’ve yet to find what works for me. I have to be ‘on it’ and responsive, so I can’t do as some suggest and check email 3 or 4 times a day. On the other hand, it’s a huge time sink that keeps me from being more productive in other aspects of the work I do. On a positive note, email ensures I have a paper trail, and it’s faster than playing phone tag. And that, leaves a little more time for this…

jim cantore is close to the ville

This post will be edited throughout the day if possible (and if weather develops).

No updates… No Internet… No TV. Hearing Henryville got hammered. Hoping everyone is safe. Thinking of those who aren’t.

You know the weather is going to be rough when The Weather Channel sends Jim Cantore to Jeffersonville, IN. Right now, in the Ville, the sun is shining and there’s not much breeze to even speak of. However, we are under a tornado watch until 9:00 PM EST, and a wind advisory will be in effect from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM EST. Tornadoes have already been reported today, and The Weather Channel says, “A widespread tornado outbreak is likely today” for our area.

We have a weather radio and the batteries are charged. I hope the same for all of you.

I plan to update this post with photos if I happen to get any good shots or video — so be sure to refresh if you come back.
Be safe!!
