Relaxing after mowing the front yard before starting in the back, I was thinking how I’m already sick of the yard mowing responsibility. Ok, so it’s only my second time. Still, whose idea was it to start mowing yards — and why did they decide it was a good idea?
Edwin Beard Budding was granted a patent for his first invention — the lawn mower in 1830. Did you know that lawns are the most grown crop in the US and the purpose is just to make us look good? According to Scientific American, lawns are an indication of your status in the community and an indicator of success…. and pretty much lawns are American.
Because I care absolutely a big fat zero about my status or proving success, I guess I only do it because it’s the American thing to do. That, and I don’t want my neighbors to hate me; I don’t want to lower the property values around here in case I want to sell; and because it’s what I’ve always done and will likely always continue to do.
That is… until someone decides mowing is against the ecosystem or something.
So until some Democrat ::cough:: :: cough:: makes a law about not mowing, I’ll keep on plugging along every spring, summer and fall. Yay!
So here’s to Teddy Bear’s dead-looking grass… and another grass-mowing day that will soon be in the books.
TIL (Today I Learned): Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s, was a high-school dropout. Afraid his success would encourage teens to drop out of school, he went back at age 60 and earned his GED.
