i’m growing my weight in tomatoes

May 29, 2021

I planted tomatoes for the first time ever! That’s not to say I haven’t had my share of fresh tomatoes, I’ve just never planted them myself. The Peskies always make sure I have plenty, and they may have to do that again this year since I know ZERO about vegetable (or fruit or herb) gardening.

Because a gardening area here is non-existent, I figured I’d try the bucket method. But then I found plant bags that are supposed to drain much better than a bucket. I’m guessing the 5 plants I gave the Peskies (and they planted around the same time as me) are thriving and have grown at least twice as fast as mine. Wanna bet I hear all about it? 🙄

Being a gardening newbie, I Googled how many tomatoes I can expect for my effort. I found that on average, one plant can product 30 pounds in a season. Some “experts” say 10 pounds… others go as high as 80 pounds. The Gardening Channel says 200 tomatoes in a season per plant, and Greenhouse Today says to grow 1 to 4 plants per person.

ARG! GARDEN MATH??

Dharma isn’t interested in garden math and doesn’t even plan to eat a single one. Does she wonder why humans grow a pulpy, edible thing when they don’t know if it’s a vegetable, fruit, or berry of an herb? Probably not — but I KNOW she thinks it’s a darned shame I’m not growing bacon.

TIL (Today I Learned): Veterinarians kill themselves at rates 2.5 to 3.5 times the general population. It’s said that’s due in part to online trolling and threats from pet owners who blame them for the death of a pet, and their easy access to lethal medicines.
