the more i learn about people…

May 30, 2021

Have y’all seen why hatWRKS in Nashville is a trending topic? They started selling “not vaccinated” patches which resemble the yellow Star of David badges that Jewish people were forced to wear as identifiers during the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Europe. What were they thinking?!?

I am vaccinated, but I don’t judge anyone that chooses not to be. Of course, I care. I worry about immunocompromised people, children, and new variants. Still, if you want to wear something that says, “NOT VACCINATED” on it that’s no different than me sporting my “I’ve been vaccinated” sticker. Go for it! Stand up for what you believe in!

But NO ONE should invoke the murder of some 6 million people — no matter where on the political spectrum you fall — just to make a point. It discredits the suffering of those who actually experienced the Holocaust. It shows a lack of moral awareness.

hatWRKS removed the post after social media responses were overwhelmingly negative. But they followed up with another post defending their position. Not until Stetson said they would no longer distribute product to them did they back down by saying, “in NO WAY did i intend to trivialize the Star of David or disrespect what happened to millions of people. that is not who i am & what i stand for. my intent was not to exploit or make a profit. my hope was to share my genuine concern & fear, and to do all that i can to make sure nothing like that ever happens again. i sincerely apologize for any insensitivity.”

In other words: YOU misunderstood. I’m a good person and didn’t intend to make a profit (even though I was selling the patches for $5/each and have trucker hat on the way). I was hoping the sale of these patches would prevent non-vaccinated people from being murdered. I’m sorry you’re so sensitive.

“The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.”

Mark Twain

Make that plural, Mark, and I’m with you. 🙂
